A number of threads are trending towards the question of the hour: Could a prime Calzaghe have defeated a prime Jones, Jr?
A few points should be considered:
1. Calzaghe's utter destruction of Jones last night is an indication of the fight that should have happened 7 years ago. Just like all of Calzaghe's opponents, Roy appeared confused last night. Confused fighters tend to lock up and become uncertain. I sincerely doubt that youth alone would have alleviated this condition.
2. "Styles make fights." Nobody has ever exposed Calzaghe's style. Nobody. Is it reasonable to believe that Jones would have? A much less tarnished Bernard Hopkins couldn't do it.
3. Jones' biggest weakness is his chin. As a result, Jones was never willing to take punishment in order to deal it out. Calzaghe doesn't have this weakness.
4. Calzaghe's hand speed, foot speed, and work rate, are phenomenal. Could this compensate for Jones' vaunted hand speed and lunging shots?
It's a fair debate, unless you're still labouring under the illusions of Jones' past. IN which case, there is no debate because a prime Jones could have easily disposed of the likes of Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis.
