Telefutura Cancels Solo Boxeo, Another Big Blow
Collapse

this just goes to show that boxing has been eclipsed by soccer in the mexican community (65% of US latinos are mexican). Soccer is on all damn weekend long on Spanish language stations while solo boxeo couldnt manage to stay on the air. at least tv azteca still broadcasts great showsComment

That sucks more than any other boxing segment on tv being canceled.
It was a free over the air channel..... for my area it is the ONLY free channel that served up boxing and they were damn good at it.
Generally better fights than ESPN and HBO too. This is a huge blow to boxing.Comment

While nothing is as big as soccer.... The show had great ratings and had nothing to do with competition. In fact i would say they had no competition it was on late fridays.this just goes to show that boxing has been eclipsed by soccer in the mexican community (65% of US latinos are mexican). Anyone who objects to this can email David Downs at ddowns@univision.net or call him at 212-455-4719
Doesn't have to be a long letter, just let him know how you feel about the station canceling this program. If enough people yell, they have to listen...Comment

yeah it totally sucks that they're canceling the show, i watch solo boxeo religiously(mostly recorded on dvr), i rely on solo boxeo for my boxing fix when the no other boxing is on tv, they even play old fights when nothing is on. sad to see this one go, plus it helps out a bit with my spanglish.Comment

Well that sucks, some good fights on that show like last Friday's main event..Last month boxing fans were given the news of ESPN cancelling their "Wednesday Night Fights" series, now Telefutura has canceled their "Solo Boxeo" series, which airs live on Friday nights. Due to the ailing economy and to cut down on the heavy costs involved with the show, the popular program that began in 2000 - will end in December. [details]Comment

Hopefully it gets picked up by another spanish station, you have to remember that the ratings were good. They need to make this show 10 pm eastern/7 pm pacific plus they need to make it live. They were doing a lot of cards at Morongo where at 5pm pacific people are barely getting home from work, the promoters need to get their heads out their ases.
Dan Rafael of ESPN.com reported this past week that Telefutura's 'Solo Boxeo' would be going off the air in December due in part to the failing economy and production costs. This move had been rumored for months and unfortunately, has come to pass. With the demise of this series, along with ESPN2's 'Wednesday Night Fights' series, it becomes that much more difficult for promoters to develop their fledgling prospects.
It's not a good sign for the business of boxing anyway you slice it.
From what I'm told, since Univision sports president David Downs gave everyone a heads up about this possibility months ago, nobody within the industry is really all that stunned - just disappointed. The various companies that had most of those dates had already begun looking for contingency plans with other Spanish speaking outlets and deals could be put into place by early 2009.
One thing that hurt 'Solo Boxeo' from a promoter’s standpoint was that when they moved up their start time from 9 pm eastern to 8 pm a few years ago, it really hindered any show that was on the west coast, since most people would just be getting out of work or stuck in traffic. With that quandary, it limited the number of venues where you could place a promotion and build attractions out west.
Regardless, I'm going to miss 'Solo Boxeo' - it was a great vehicle for young fighters, had some memorable moments and most of all, it was consistent. Just about every Friday night, you could count on it to be on the air at a regular time. And the team of Bernardo Osuna and Ricardo Celis worked well together (although I'm making a broad assumption since I don't speak Spanish, but I heard they were solid), and Lupe Contreras did a great job as the ring announcer.Comment
