Let me repeat myself. He didn't change his name to a "German" name. His birth name, Avetik Abrahamyan, is hard to pronounce, so he changed it to something easier to say. In an interview, he said Arthur Abraham is his "RING-NAME".

Also, here is Arthur's response when he was asked in an interview why he represents Germany and carries the German flag; "Moreover I am bound by a contract and I can't always do what I want to do."

And keep in mind, we are talking about his nationality here. Having a german flag because of some issues in his contract doesn't make his nationality German.

soviet was a nationality. not anymore because the u.s.s.r. doesn't exist anymore.

            nationality is your country.

at the time of arthur's birth , he was a soviet citizen.

armenia was part of the soviet union 'til the early 90's.

when did he move to germany?

one could argue he lived in the soviet union or germany longer than armenia.
Haha. Soviet was NOT a nationality my friend, you are wrong. Plain and simple. Look up the definition for nationality, and read up about the Soviet Union.

USSR was made up of "union republics". Armenian SSR was one of the 15 republics that constituted the Soviet Union. A person's nationality can't be Soviet, there is no such thing. Just because Armenia was part of the Soviet Union, it doesn't mean it stopped existing as a country and as a nationality.

Edit: What's with all this extra arguments and off topic posts?

we speak to him regulary... in Armenian that is...

and well, boxing has alot of politics that he must play along with.

His paychecks (in the millions) are signed by a proud German who is well known in Germany for producing a great champion... therefore most of the time the German flag will come before the Armenian.

Arthur's parents still reside in Yerevan, Armenia and goes there pretty much after each and every victory. He is greeted by our President and was honored as a national heroe.

the soviet union was a nation. hence soviet was a nationality.

remember the old school soviet leaders encouraged people to look at themselves more as "soviet" than "russian" , "georgian" , "estonian" , etc.

latvia , lithuania , armenia , etc. were not really countries during the soviet union days. you know power was held in moscow. it wasn't 'til 1991 when all the republics got their independence.

same can be said for VIC and Vanes...

VIC was also born in Armenia and represented Armenia in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

He then stayed in Australia and made a name there becoming a champ with Aussie trainer Jeff Fenech. He is now and always will be obligated to carry the Australian flag side by side with the Armenian flag, as he does.

Vanes - obviously a US Olympian and having grown up here will always carry the US and Armenian flags hand in hand.
