I don't think he's THAT good. A lot of it is smoke and mirrors. Even with Ruiz there's a bit of Nady action there.

I mean, if someone thinks I'm dissing the guy, then I'm saying he's one of the top 60 fighters, all time. That's not a diss.
are you talking about ranking on talent or on resume?

This is my point with Roy.... his talent can't be accurately measured because - IN THE MAIN - it wasn't being tested against a high level of competition. I mean, it's just pissing on the likes of Archie Moore to put Roy above him on that basis.

But if you watch highlights of Roy he looks great... but watch all of his fights over periods. I don't care what happened in the rematch, you don't trail on the cards to Montell Griffin.

I would put Moore over him. I'd put him after 25 probably.

Montell was a real light heavy, even beat JT twice in close fights. And I'm sorry when you have a rematch like that, thats impressive. Not to just win, but completely destroy your opponent is impressive. You know what it is, its just people have in their minds that everybody roy fought was richard frazier, and thats not true. And people tend to degrade comp, because the guys don't have big names. For example, Tolesco was a good light heavy(decent fighter), but to the fan its a bum.

Great post. I just made a similar point in another Roy thread. People seem to want to believe that Frazier was representative of ROy's level of competition at 175. It is just ridiculous.

Good post Truth, good talking with you.

I mean, I DO rate the guy, but when I read stuff like "Roy was the greatest boxer of all time" I have to raise an eyebrow.

Actually, I'd probably put Floyd above him.... agree/disagree?

i will admit that watching roy fight can be boring, because there is no drama or this and that, usually a one sided affair. the thing is, watching a roy fight live back in the day was exciting, and the dominance was something that got you fired up, seeing if he was going to actually have to fight his ass off or was he going to do it with ease. watching his fights afterwards was very boring, unless you were looking for something specific, other than that his fights were not that exciting to watch in replay.

i would like to see him beat calzaghe, i really don't care but i usually always go with the underdog in these type fights, unless i really can't stand the person, and i'm not a huge fan of jones neither.

i met him once and was let down kind of, i thought that he was a more humble person, but then again, that was before he got starched by tarver, so who knows? he might have changed his tune.

But that's the thing, it wasn't. It was a poor paper champion. Still impressive, but it wasn't THE champ by a long way. An example of how easy it was came when another middleweight did the same soon after (though we all know what happened there).

On the subject, it's the first time I heard the HBO commentary on the Ruiz fight tonight, and it was funny to hear George shouting at them for saying it was a paper champ.

That's the thing, I enjoyed them first time, but their rewatch value is limited. There was a reason there was a "roidcott".
