I know I have flip flopped on my prediction a few times on this fight, and I am not the only one. If you have responded to different threads with varying predictions on Calzaghe-Jones, projected different outcomes to your friends regarding the fight, or if you just want to weigh-in on the issue again, then this is the thread for you!
In my case, I had a magical feeling at first that Roy was gonna come through with the victory and shock the world! It started after the Tito fight when I saw flashes of the "old Roy." This feeling was only augmented by Hopkins brilliant 'turn-back-the-clock' performance against the Ghost.
But, I also had my doubts... At the NYC press conference, Roy's face looked really old up close and in-person. Calzaghe looked bigger than Roy too, which I never expected. After seeing the first 24/7 episode, I wasn't sure about the mental state of Roy, either. Talking about him not being 'a killer' and how he just wanted to 'have fun'... seeing him train with a bunch of fat guys.... these observations only nurtured the seeds of doubt in my mind.
I also started to remember back on the disappointing and unsatisfying feeling that I had after they announced the Hopkins-Calzaghe decision. Joe "won" the fight on his ineffective activity alone. Even if Roy is able to land the better, cleaner, more effective punches, I was doubtful that he could match the punch output of Joe that judges seem to like so much...
But now, it is fight week. We are in the final stretch of the most anticipated bout of '08 and a renewed feeling of hope is coming over me again. I am seeing different things in the 24/7 video that offer hope when before, all I could see was what appeared to be a semi-delusional, old Roy Jones vs, a younger, more focused Calzaghe. Where as last week, I was kind of nervous and had begun telling people (for the first time since the fight was announced) that Calzaghe would win, now I can't wait for Saturday! I am back aboard the Hype Train! I am rooting for Roy, and predicting victory for the old legend!
I mean, really... there's no way I could pick against Roy now. If I picked against Roy and then the bell rang and he started to win the fight contrary to my prediction, I couldn't fully enjoy the win or the comeback. This is not always the case when I make a wrong prediction. For example, last night I picked Mijares, but enjoyed Vic's performance nevertheless, as well as the knockout, because it was a great display of dominance and an entertaining fight. But in this case, we are talking about my favorite fighter of all time...
I have been waiting for Roy's comeback since Jones-Tarver III! After the fight, I must have googled Roy Jones's name almost every day in the News Section waiting for word of his next comeback fight. When I did my own roadwork, I would envision fantasy scenarios in which Roy would travel improbable roads to glory in a brilliant comeback, defeating the likes of Johnson, Tarver and no other than Joe Calzaghe. I'd play out the rounds in my mind and by the time my vision had run its course, I'd realize that my medium pace jog had evolved into an almost all-out sprint.
Now, we have made it here and I am with Roy all the way, baby!!! **** Enzo Calzaghe's preposterous claim on 24/7 about his son. No, you rat-faced bastard, it is ROY JONES JR. who is "Pound for Pound, the best fighter in the world... EVER". WAR ROOOOOY JOOOOOOONES!!!!
