Insider Notebook: Margarito vs. Mosley is Getting Close

By Robert Morales - Anyone got a pencil sharpener?

According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, that was the figurative question posed him by "Sugar" Shane Mosley on Tuesday when the two were discussing a potential fight with welterweight world champion Antonio Margarito of Mexico.

Schaefer said he met with the Mosleys - Shane and his wife, Jin - for several hours to try and put the finishing touches on this fight, which would likely take place in January.

"He said, 'Let's see if maybe we can sharpen the pencil,' "Schaefer said, meaning Mosley is hopeful the current offer on the table can still be sweetened. "I told him, 'We have already

Margarito is a better fight for Mosley, legacy wise and I would think it offers more money than a Berto fight.

Part of me would love to see a 4th fight between Vazquez and Marquez but another part of me just thinks it's too much for 2 guys to go through that again, those are the kind of fights that affects fighters in the long run.

Trampler shouldn't match Chavez Jr. up with Angulo if he wants Chavez Jr. to keep his 0.

Those lower weight guys should be making way more money.

I've always felt that way about a 4th fight between Vasquez and Marquez as well.

I'm surprised Andre Dirrell's raking in 100k for this fight.

It's kind of sad that even at the highest level, smaller fighters are paid what prospect Super Middleweights make.

Well considering his corner and promoter take part of that, he's probably taking in no more than 70k. Still good money considering where he's at in his career.

very interesting, cant wait to see mosley vs margarito. mijares is getting a pretty good paycheck for his weight and the attraction of the fight itself. a 4th vasquez vs marquez is just too much. there are other fights for both of them. i think shaw is just trying to milk the hype around the trilogy.

                Good post.
Mosley is obviously the bigger fight for Margarito. At this point, both opponents are dangerous, but Margarito will be a solid favorite against either and I would be surprised to see him lose. Might as well take the bigger fight.
Vazquez and Marquez need to move on. Vazquez is finally getting recognized as a great fighter, the best move for him at this point is to establish dominance in his weight class, or move up to FW. Marquez probably wont win a fourth fight, I wouldnt mind seeing what else he can do with his career.
Chavez Jr. against Angulo would be a lot of fun to watch, but we all know Angulo would probably be waaaaaay too much.
