He looked better against Pavlik (170) than he did against Calzaghe (175), but looked better against Tarver (175) than against Winky (170).

I don't think the weight was a difference, I think the opponent, and possibly the fact he had Naazim for Tarver and Pavlik, that made him look better.

i think this time at 70 he was less bulky because he did not use mackie shilestone, and his shape was better for boxing than the more muscular one in the previous fights.

Not sure what really is trying to be achieved here. Lets pick the weight class limits where we think one boxer in particular fights best at a certain time, regardless of the rest? What it seems like. So we just change the weight limits a few times a year to suite a certain guy or two now?

The idea is it bridges gaps in between the weight classes and there's even differences between them. The jump from MW to SMW is tolerable as it is, if it were 170 people would go up a lot less. Also a difference of only 5 lbs between SMW and LHW is too small to be be worthwhile.

The fight in question should have been at 168 really, 5 lbs wasn't much further to go down and 10lbs was a fair bit to go up. Hopkins said himself he can easily get down that far so why didn't he. There was no reason the fight had to be a catch weight, it should have just been SMW.

Oh my God. You strike again.

I never said to change the limits at different times of the year, man.

All I want to say to you is go back and read my post slowly. I didnt say "BECAUSE Hopkins looked better at 170, I suggest SMW limit to be 170". I said Melly-Mel inspired me thinking about this.

If 5lbs isnt worthwhile then why do people move from Junior Lightweight to Lightweight?

you gotta take into account that there smaller guys, so 5lbs is around the same % of body mass for a 130 lb guy as 8lbs is for a 160lb guy.

It's more about relative weight. Five lbs to a 135 pounder (3.7% increase in weight) is a much bigger deal than 5 lbs to a 170 pounder (2.9% increase in weight).

That makes a lot of sense.

                Thanks.

Don't be so sensitive, I wasn't attacking you, merely pointing out why it's not a good idea and hasn't been implemented or even considered.

I've backed that up with reasoning's, have you? If Hopkins Pavlik isn't really to do with it or a factor then why bring it up at all?

As for fly weights, they have less overall weight to play with so gaining and losing pounds is a bigger deal, as it's a bigger portion of their overall weight. So that's at best irrelevant, at worst back up why SMW at 170 isn't considered.

Kelly Pavlik and Abraham will eventually have to go to SMW, how can you justify making them go 2 lbs further than necessary? It would make them heavier, fatter then needs be for their body types where they perform well as we've seen. Plus a LHW can just lose half that weight, 5 lbs, to come down a bit a smash the **** out of em, weighing way more on fight night.
