TRUTH,isn't it entirley possible that jones simply just got caught with a great left hand by antonio tarver? and then cameback way too quickly after the knockout? Even against Tarver the third time, it looked he could be real good still, but he was too focused on not getting knocked out. I don't think Jones is as shot as people think...
You're absolutely right. But regardless, he was slipping. He's been slipping since Derrick Harmon landed 59% of his powershots against him in 2002. Plus, he's a couple months from 40. Regardless of what happened the past few years, he'd be slipping anyway.
But his hands are still fast, he's still an excellent ring general and he still has power. His chin is highly suspect at this stage. His reflexes have slowed considerably and his legs, if anything, are shot. But considering the high plane he was on before, just because they've slipped doesn't mean he's done. It just means he has to compensate for it by adjusting his style accordingly. He never did that before because, well, he kept winning. Can he do it now, at this stage? I don't know.Comment

Well I'm not saying for a second thinking that hes going into walk into the phone and come out as superman. I understand that the Roy Jones Jr. who koed Montell Griffin in less than 3 minutes is gone. But maybe, like you said, he can find a way to win even at his advanced age. Atleast hes fighting someone is his age bracket, Calzaghe being 36 himself to me makes this possibility not an extreme stretch. I'm picking Roy Jones Jr. to win for the following reasons...
1.) I don't think Joe Calzaghe is as good as people say. Although do consider him to be great.
2.) Roy is still fast with his hands, in my opinion still has good stamina and very smart in the ring. I also think that while his reflexes have slipped, they arn't horrible.
3.) If Hopkins can be effective against Joe at 43. I think Roy can too, Roy is faster, stronger and quicker than Hopkins.Comment

Well Hopkins and Roy are two different beasts but I initially tabbed Roy to beat Joe for those first two reasons. I don't think Joe is quite on his level and when faced with that, it makes it very hard to pick Joe. But all natural logic tells me Roy isn't quite on ROY'S level anymore either lol.Well I'm not saying for a second thinking that hes going into walk into the phone and come out as superman. Sigh...
I will say this, 24/7 to me didn't show a Roy Jones who is clowning around, it showed a version who is very, very confident he will win.Comment

Is that actually the case though. I mean amongst boxing fans we make Joe the favourite but amongst casual fans I'm not sure they can distinguish between this Roy and that bastard you would have to set his feet in concrete and make him fight in a corset and tie one hand behind his back, to beat.
One of my best mates who watches boxing occassionally is convinced Calzaghe has absolutely no chance, so I'd think that feeling is more prevalent in the USA isn't it?Comment

imdazed. I understand your dilemma. Its a tough call. I mean if you really want to just go by the facts it points to a Calzaghe win. I could be completely wrong in picking Jones. this is just a taking a risk kind of prediction. I'm throwing whats on paper out the window. whats on paper screwed me in pavlik/hopkins..lolWell Hopkins and Roy are two different beasts but I initially tabbed Roy to beat Joe for those first two reasons. That is the only one he really got. That pitty pat ain't gon make Roy fold up. Pitty pattin with all them shots just leaves him open for sharp countershots. Roy got handspeed that Joe ain't never seen. so he got to box and put some ump behind his shots.Comment
