I believe there are some refs who would have stopped the fight at the 5 second mark before the knock down because bute looked so lethargic and beat or would have just waved it off when he was getting up due to the beating he took.
I can see that point of view, but this is a lose vs lose situation for the ref. If he stopped that fight and took Bute's title away he'd be scrutinized badly. Maybe not as badly because boxing is much smaller in Canada, but I think there would be plenty of questioning his decision. He was in a tough situation. Bute got on his feet, and kept his gloves off the mat. According to the rules, that looks ok.

If it had happened twenty seconds earlier, I bet he would have let Bute continue, because he was defending his title and it was the first knockdown. I'm sure he would have gone down almost immediately. Do you stop a guy on his feet in the dying seconds of a fight when his title is on the line? To me, that's a tough thing to do.

when bute got kd, there was 2 seconds left on the clock. it took 24 seconds for the bell to ring and bute was up by 8-9 seconds by my count. I think the controversy lies more with the delayed bell ring than it does with the ref cuz I don't think the ref changed the outcome, Bute would've won the decision regardless of the refs delayed count.

In the case where a guy is knocked down and the count continues after the 3 minute mark, the bell doesn't ring until the count is finished. I don't think there was anything wrong with when the bell rang.

From that video, it's really hard to hear when the ref starts counting, but it looks to me like Bute beat the count getting up and was on his feet before the ref warned Andrade back to his corner. So the delay in the count, which was done correctly didn't change anything. All Bute had to do was stay on his feet for the remainder of the count. If anything, he had to stay on his feet longer. If he beat the count he could have collapsed onto the mat immediately afterward if he'd wanted.

The only argument I can see is whether Bute should have been ruled as knocked out on his feet, but I think that's a very very tough sell for a guy defending his title, after his first knockdown and way ahead on the scorecards. And I'll add that I'm not sure if the ref is even supposed to stop the fight if he's out on his feet between rounds. From the rules, it doesn't seem like he has to. Maybe he can with discretion for the fighters safety, but when the fight is already over, he doesn't have to protect the fighter anymore.

Maybe one of the real boxers, trainers or whatever can weigh in on this if they have experience with IBF or a similar situation.

The way bute looked I would not blame any ref if they did, but then again they were in bute's home turf and the ref was from the montreal. Like I said, I think there are many refs who would have stopped the fight. If the fight was held in the u.s. or neutral territory imo many refs would have stopped that fight even at the 5 second mark. Refs aren't nor should they be held accountable for how much time is left in a fight to decide what precaution to take. A foul in the first quarter of a ball game should be the same as if there was 1 second left in the 4th quarter.

Also as bute was lifelessly leaning on the turnbuckle taking his count at the end the ref didn't ask him if he was ok and also didn't ask him to walk toward him to see how he was.

I still get hyped seeing the 12 round and now im pissed off once again. You should of let the video run a little longer where Bute was walking side ways to his corner. Sucks to be Arandade right now, he must feel like ****, but i hope he doesn't let this shake him, he won this fight.
