He was much faster, had much more stamina, better use of the jab and had much better use of his legs. Calzaghe's punches are too wide and his balance is too off, and that would lead to consistent hard counter punches from an accurate puncher with really good power. In fact, Mitchell has Joe hurt( with a counter right hand to be exact) but he kept throwing wide punches and wasn't precise. What would have happened if he would have straighten up his shots and took his time? Joe would have been in trouble.

The outcome of this fight is really not that hard to figure out. Calzaghe is not far if at all past his prime at all, and lost a split decision to a 43 year old Hopkins.
Its not the fact that Joe's only a few years past his prime, but the state that his hands are in. A younger Calzaghe with healthy hands was a whole different animal.

I used to think prime deals with age, but in sports I define prime as a pinnacle of a career. Generally a fighter's prime happens to be 25-30 age range. That seems to be the norm, but Hopkins is a different beast.

To me Hopkins' prime was during the middleweight tournament, he looked unbeatable there. And yes I too have watched an early 90's Bernard. He was a KO machine back then.

Their styles would always make a close fight but I'm going with Hopkins by close but clear decision, 7-5 or 8-4 in rounds with maybe a knockdown along the way.

Therez a limit to how many right straightz you can take
I've watched plenty of Hopkins right through his career.

Calzaghe had a rock solid chin and is defensively very competent. I doubt Bernard would even have looked for a knock out in that fight.

People who think Bernard stops Joe no problem are dreaming. Calzaghe has a rock solid chin and its not like BHop is an extremely powerful hitter. There is no way either of these guys are getting stopped in this fight.

Yes, of course. I watched the fight while it aired live on TV, plus seen it many times since. Calzaghe was knocked down briefly, that's all!

i thought he was a little hurt by the look on his face and how he got up.. but he shrugged it off and fought back hard which was impressive
