its used as apsychological tool, when a fighter looks you dead in the eye it can say something, sometimes you can sense the hunger in their demanor, sometimes it is used in the other way as well. when a fighter looks you dead in the eye and then looks away it is seen as a sign of weakness, poor body language like that often gives alot away and makes you lose the psychological battle.
but yeah alot of the time its all BS.

I agree with you about MMA staredowns, like the one with Don Frye and James Thompson in Pride 33, it looked so ******, Thompson's nose was completely squashed up.It's part of the game. Get right in front of your opponent and stare him right down. Get in his face. Some fighters don't like it and get heated.
Notice in the Mayweather/Hatton fight that the weigh in staredown was the only time that Hatton lost his cool a little bit?
Ain't nothin wrong with a good old fashion staredown. You can tell a lot from a fighter's eyes.
That isn't half as bad as MMA... the stare downs in MMA turn into a kissing match.Comment
