Prime for prime Jones was the better fighter. But Hopkins now has the better resume. The fact that he can still put out top level performances past 40 shows a part of that.
Hopkins would totally outshine Jones if he was a welterweight, he beat some truly great WWs. At 16o Jones beat one of the greatest middleweight champs ever Hopkins. At 168 he beat one of the best SMWs ever Toney. He DOMINATED LHW for years. He became the first former middlewight champ to win a HW title in 100yrs. Jones wins it.
Hopkins. Jones isn't too far behind. If you strictly went by name and name alone it'd be Jones (for whatever that's worth).
Toney
Hopkins
Hill
McCallum
Castro
Harding
Johnson
Tarver
Griffin
Louise
Malinga
All world class fighters or guys who had fought well on a high level at some point. Many of those wins have angles to them which might detract from them in some peoples eyes (old, smaller, weight drained, green, etc opponents) but that is a very good list of names.
all those guys were on the p4p top 5 at the time he fought them
Pavlik was 7, Tarver I highly doubt was in the top 5.
Tito and Winky were top 5, but they were outsized by Hopkins.
By your logic let's give credit to Oscar for fighting current p4p#1! If Oscar beats Manny then his resume is the greatest of all time.
Look Hopkins is great, but when you look at his resume you have to notice that his run at middleweight is ruined by losing to the Jones and Taylor, ie: the ONLY true middleweights of p4p level that he faced during his reign.
(Forgive me for putting Taylor and Jones on the same level)
RJJR fight world great Champions in many weight Division including Heavyweight, Bhop is not (did not fight in HW div). so still RJJR has a better resume, but in the sense when boxing is the topic, they are both great fighters.
Let's be honest, how many of you started truly following the sport after 2001? Honestly?
Yeah...that'll greatly impact a poll like this.
Watching Bernard Hopkisn dominate last Saturday was breathtaking. From his ring entrance alone, you knew you were about to witness something special. That said...Roy Jones Jr, who won titles through heavyweight, still has a better resume. But I'll tell ya what - should be real interesting to see how he does against Calzaghe next month.
