Was Ike really a murderous puncher?

These poll results are a shame, Ibeabuchi was nowhere near overrated. He was the first to beat a prime Byrd and a prime Tua, and even till this day they are one of the most recognizable names in the sport. Not only that, Tua and Byrd both had over 10 more fights then he did. He knocked Byrd out with one punch, something that had never been done before or since and is also the only fighter to out slug a prime or any version of Tua.Comment

On that note, Lewis beat Tua ridiculously easily, and Ike warred with him.
I think I gave Tua two rounds against Lewis and that was being generous.Comment

Ike has become a "what if" fantasy for those who today dream of a black heavyweight champion, just like Morrison, with his drug problem and his hep C and HIV, was a "what if" fantasy for those who dreamed of a white heavyweight champion.Comment

not a murderous puncher, but a damn good pressure fighter with a work-rate that was unreal for such a musclebound heavyweight.
he had damn good power though, just not that concussive 1-punch kind.Comment

Ike definitely pulled his punches. I mean Tina put up a good fight in the early rounds while Ike was just toying with her. In the later rounds, he definitely showed his true power and dropped her with a wicked left hook. They have had a few rematches with Ike dominating them all. Ike was NOT overrated.Comment

The punch he laid Byrd out with was crazy (to me it looked like he made Byrd black out for a split second based on how Byrd was acting like he didn't get knocked down, if that is not real power I do not know what is). I watched all those fights and he was a good fighter but from Tua to Byrd you could already see decline, and while I think he could do good against many fighters he is not some unbeatable fighting machine. Who knows what could have been with him it is hard to say. He lacked the proper dicipline to really get to the top and stay there.
He did have real power though, of that I am certain. Really from a physical standpoint I have very little doubt about Ibaebuchi, the mental side of the game and handling any success is really where he falls woefully short.Last edited by The Gambler1981; 10-16-2008, 02:09 AM.Comment

Styles make fights and Ike was not the sort of fighter to just sit back and peck at Tua with the jab all night. Ike was a good fighter and anyone who denies that just doesn’t like him because he was a mental nut case. He beat Bryd who was the no1 heavyweight at one point so that’s got to prove something, I would say that he would have held a belt at one point.Comment
