it was a good stoppage. his hands were goin down and he didn't even bother to try to get up. even with smoger on top of him, taylor's face showed no desire to continue.

He probably could've given him a chance, but it all honesty, I don't think that would've changed anything. As much as I love Taylor, he was out, and I have no problem with the stoppage.

Taylor was trapped in the corner. He was tired and started taking huge shots. Just before Smoger jumps in, you will see Taylor's head fall forward. Right there he was out and Smoger jumped in because the only thing that was holding Taylor up was the ropes and Pavlik. Taylor slumped on his own, but Smoger had already commited on saving him.

        It was a dangerous situation.

I said it at the time, and I'll say it again now.

The stoppage was too early, Taylor wasn't even given a count.

When I saw the thread title I thought it was about Pavlik being nearly out in round two!

But since it's about the actual ending of thefigt I thought the stoppage was excellent. Taylor slumped down in the corner. The ref's got to be alert when a fighter is hurt in a corner. Better safe than sorry although this stoppage wasnt safe it was right on time.

If the ref sees that the fighter is out, he can call it without a count (IIRC). Or if the fighter is taking lots of unanswered damage and/or is unable to defend himself.

              No count was necessary.

Maybe I have an old school idea of a champion going out on his shield with the ref giving him a count because IMO if you're the true champ of the world you've earned the right to be given a chance to get up. If Smoger started counting and Taylor didn't get up then the result is the same but at least the fallen champion is given that curteousy by the referee.

Watch the fight ending again. When Smoger started jumping in to stop it, Taylor was still standing, but his head slumped over. Taylor fell after Smoger called the fight and was forcing his way between them.

Smoger had two choices, stop the fight or let the punishment continue as Taylor's head slumped forward. It was a split second decision he made with a very wounded fighter trapped in a corner.

There was no standing 8 count. It was either stop the fight, or let it go. There was a chance Taylor may not have fallen a half second later, would you take a chance?

                    Yes and No.

Yes, I think it was a quick stoppage because it was a title fight....but

No, i don't think it was a quick stoppage cus Taylor was in trouble.

Personally, i think the ref should have let Pavlik finish him off. Beat Taylor's ass until he couldn't fight no more.

I am a fan of Jermaine Taylor though

That decision of Smoger allowed a rematch to happen. If he didn't stop it, there would've been no rematch, because Taylor could've gotten seriously hurt.
