I thought Chad looked great, MUCH better than he did against Johnson that's for sure. Hopefully he'll get the winner of Calzaghe-Jones, and if that's Calzaghe I think it'll be a hell of a fight, after the Johnson fight I thought that Calzaghe could have his way with Chad but after this showing against Tarver I say it's a pick-em fight.

problem was chad did a very good job of counter punching in this fight, and when he threw he was so fast tarver wasn't able to counter punch. so if you ask me, whether he was lead or counter (as was his usual style) dawson's speed was the biggest factor. tarver couldn't "return fire," and really only go off when dawson decided to stand there and let him throw.

i think dawson learned a lot from the johnson fight, to just use his tools.....he's such a crowd pleaser that he decided to try to brawl with glen johnson, and thats not his game....he got in trouble for it too. i'd like to see hm fight johnson again, just to shut every1 up. the result would be much like this one, b/c in that fight the same was pretty much happening until chad decided to brawl with the guy. in a rematch, he'd just stick to his guns, he's just too fast, as long as he fights johnson the same way he fought tarver tonight, he probably busts johnson up in the fight...........
That's as good an explantation as I've gotten so far or expect to get. You're right, of course: Dawson's hand speed was the deciding factor in the fight. While I don't think Tarver would have won regardless of what style he chose to fight, I think he could have made it a more competive fight by fighting in the manner he was accustomed to fighting, plus he might have been able to time Dawson's handspeed better if he had stayed back and let Dawson come to him.

I really feel Tarver should call it a day on his career. He's been a great boxer and great champion and has had a great career but he didn't challenge Dawson at all tonight and looked like he had nothing left to give!
Thats what I didn't like about his performance. If you are dominating the way he was dominating, I expect you to give me everything you have in an effort to get your guy out of there.

Dawson gave us just enough to win rounds convincingly. He didn't dig deep, he didn't put forth any effort. He won, he fought smart, but he didn't fight to his ability.

I don't think there is anyone that doesn't believe that Dawson could have done more, he could have thrown more punches, he could have punished Tarver, but he chose not too.

i'd advise all the old guys (hopkins, roy, calzaghe, johnson, tarver) to leave this kid alone........
The reason he had trouble with Johnson in the first place is because he punches in spurts, with no openings, he just throws.

Johnson throws back, and he hits you. Dawson would lose again. I say again because Glen Johnson won that fight, I don't care what the judges say.

He did what he needed to to win and stuck to his gameplan.

                    Also showed slightly improved defense.

It was a clear win for Dawson.

Very nice article. Statement performance by Dawson but he's gonna have to wait. Even worse, he may have to fight Glen Johnson again.

I'm guessing Tavoris Cloud is next. Pity for Cloud, he still needs a year or two before challenging the likes of Dawson. What would really be nice is if the winner of Jones-Calzaghe signs to fight him. That would be a TRUE changing of the guard fight - the grizzled champ against the talented, younger version.
