u fight for an interim title
that was the original idea but its now only used to make more money for the alphabet organitations

it's given out if the current champ is unable to defend his mandatory in a certain amount of time

take Sam Peter for example, after winning back to back WBC eliminators he was in line to face Oleg Maskaev .. fight was all lined up and good to go .. but Oleg injured his back .. canceling the fight

so the WBC sanctioned Peter to face McCline for the interim title. winner of that interim title bout is mandatory to the full WBC champ (Maskaev) when Maskaev recovers

im sure there are more specifics and details to it, but that's the best way I can sum it up

a temporary title fought since the rightful champ is unable to defend his belt for some reason or another.
