  • Mickey Rourke

I just saw a BBC interview with Mickey Rourke where he was talking about when he fought as a pro boxer. He said when he retired from boxing in 1994 he was 3 fights away from a shot at the WBO Cruiserweight world title but the doctors told him not to fight anymore as he was experiencing memory loss and would get irepairable damage if he fought on! I checked him out on boxrec and he only had a record of 6 wins (4KOs) 2 draws and 0 losses so how could he have been that close to a WBO title shot with so few fights? Does anyone remember him in his pro boxing days? Was he any good? If Mickey is telling the truth about his title shot he probably would have faced Nestor Giovannini who was champion till December 1994 or Ralf Rocchigiani who was champion from 10 June 1995 to 4 October 1997. Dariusz Michalczewski held that title from 17 December 1994 to january 1 1995 after beating Nestor Giovannini but opted to return to Light Heavyweight instead of defending it. Would he have stood a chance of winning or was he crap like several celebrities in the interview/documentary I saw?

Documentary was called "The Dark Side of Fame With Piers Morgan".

rourke was a good amatuer, but this was along time ago. mickey was born around 1952 or so so i think when he fought in the am's it would have been the 70's and i think he weighed around 155 -160. when he fought as a pro, he was old, 39, and every fight was a war, he might have won a cruiserweight title but he'd take so much damage every fight i don't see him holding that belt for very long. rourke's boxing career is why his face is all f.ucked up, one of the last guys he fought collapsed his cheekbone and mickey had to get collagen injections in his face - that's why he's not pretty anymore

They showed a couple of clips but I couldn't really gage how good he was. Sounded good in amateurs with a record of 20 wins 6 losses with 17 knockouts, the first 12 being in the first round. He fought in Ams from 1969-1971. His injuries were broken nose, toe, ribs, a split tongue, and a compressed cheekbone. He looks a bit messed up now!! So you think he may have been good enough to win a world title?

6-0-2 is almost too good of a record to challenge for the Frank Warren belt.

if he'd stayed a middleweight and turned pro in the 70's he probably could have won a title - USBA title or WBO but i sure don't see him beating guys like hagler or monzon - they'd bust up his pretty face and knock him the f.uck out. his soft life as an actor ****ing half of hollywood didn't help his boxing skills

              Thats funny!!

Rourke was a decent fighter but he wasn't world class in my opinion. Just a tough pug who was better than expected considering his fame as an actor and not an athlete. As someone else pointed out, every fight was a struggle.

Maybe he would have fought Carl Thompson for a vacant title. There were opportunities as the WBO cruiserweight belt has quite possibly the most pathetic lineage of any recognized belt in any division.

He just won today. ROFLMAO... There is no way he was going to get a WBO title shot even back then. As bad as the champions and were and the challengers were even worse he was a novice pro who beat stumble bums who fought at the tank town level. At best he could have fought for a regional belt against one of these tank town level fighters.

Rourke was a good am boxer for real, he had a lot of experience. But when he decided to turn pro in his 40s he was a lazy drunk who hated doing road work, he hated cardiovascular training, and at 62 he is in shape but not fighting shape he just wanted to fight one time in Moscow, he said he wanted to take his mind off his chihuahua who passed away.

Rourke is just one of those guys who hated roadwork, he could lift weights and spar and hit the bag but didn't like doing roadwork which is why he always looked gassed out in those fights.
