yeah I dunno about that. This was a very long time ago ('94) and this was the only time hopkins ever went down in his career. It definitely could possibly have been due to the very high altitude and not adjusting to that as he only arrived in Ecuador shortly prior to the fight. Out of all of hopkins pro fights, you'll never see him ever take a punch and look like that. I personally think it was a fluke.Comment

he didn't seem fazed or hurt by it though yes it had a delayed reaction but it was also a very sweet punch, hopkins doesn't have a defensive style because he has a poor chin he has a defensive style because his punch output cant be what it once was.

Hopkins could barely stand at the end of that fight. He was SEVERELY fatigued. He didn't arrive in Ecuador early enough to adjust to the sea level.Comment

I agree with Natas.
Lennox Lewis also had problems with altitude vs Rahman IMO. I remember reading an article about how important it is to acclimatise yourself to it, otherwise it feels as if you can't get enough oxygen and your energy levels are lower than usual.
Roy Jones can't hurt him, yet Mercado can knock him down twice? Altitude must have had something to do with it. I know that there is a bad styles matchup for everyone, but Hopkins handled him pretty easily in the rematch so his style can't have been that difficult.
Hopkins even withstood Calzaghe's awesome power, his chin is iron IMO.Comment

funny thing is mercado is not a monster puncher
anyway the height of ecuador specially quito ****s u up
i remember when i went there and started running i lasted like 3 minutes and then i was like so out of breath and my head hurted
soccer players usually need at least 2 days to get use to the heightComment
