Oscar De La Hoya entertained the possibility of eventually fighting three-time welterweight titlist Antonio Margarito while promoting his up-coming mega-event with Manny Pacquiao on popular Spanish-language radio show “Piolin Por La Manana” on 101.9 FM in Los Angeles this past Monday morning.
It was the first time since the “Tijuana Tornado” stopped Miguel Cotto that De La Hoya did not dismiss or put off the notion of taking on the dangerous Mexican national.
De La Hoya’s stop at Piolin’s radio studio was part of his cross-country media tour to hype his December 6th showdown with Pacquiao, but in L.A. (where Margarito trains), and on a Spanish radio show that mainly caters to Mexican listeners, the conversation inevitably swayed towards Margarito.
De La Hoya said that he will indeed fight the current WBA welterweight champ after his encounter with “the PacMan”.
“The fight will definitely happen,” De La Hoya answered when the radio show's players asked his of his plans with Margarito.
Perhaps De La Hoya is coming around due to his pride, in part a response to the hardcore fans’ chants of ''Margarito, Margarito'' at past Golden Boy Promotions – including the Mosley-Mayorga showdown two week's ago – and perhaps he realizes that the fight could be a big event. If he was paying attention, he noticed the WBA champ being mobbed by fans at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
