Two Sides/Two Stories; To Kirkland, Donaire Departures

By Rick Reeno - Back in June, junior middleweight prospect James Kirkland (23-0, 20KOs), and IBF/IBO flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (19-1, 12KOs), broke their ties with promoter Gary Shaw. Letters were issued to Shaw on behalf of both fighters, claiming that he breached their promotional contracts by falling behind on the number of fights that were owed to them, and there were claims that Shaw had violated the Muhammad Ali Act by failing to properly disclose revenue numbers from previous fights.

According to Shaw, the fighters were pulled from his company without good reason by their manager, Cameron Dunkin. While speaking with BoxingScene.com, Shaw denied any allegations of wrongdoing, and claims that a personal grudge being held by Dunkin was the primary reason for both fighters being pulled. Donaire was eventually picked up by Top Rank, while Kirkland is the centerpiece of an ongoing legal battle between Shaw and Kirkland's co-managers, Dunkin and attorney Michael Miller. [details]

bringing nonito a title shot at darchinyan was the only good thing gary shaw has done to nonito. after that fight, nothing has happened for nonito for over a year already when he is supposed to stay active and competitive. the young champion needs to fight but gary leave him where he is. you can't blame donaire if he dissociate with gary. leaving gary was a wise move for donaire.

with bob arum, nonito is making a living again.

Gary Shaw is a scum bag, I wish he would have stayed in MMA.

Too bad he lost elitexc over 60 million dollars and got canned from that pony show, I'm glad Nonito and Kirkland left him.

Very nice article by the way

EliteXC Lost Over 27 Million In 2007
EliteXC reported $27,584,500 in losses for 2007 in the company's annual report. The company has now lost $31,834,355 between its inception and 12/31.

                2008 loses
EliteXC was on the brink of disaster well before Slice agreed to fight Seth Petruzelli, long before the CBS:”Saturday Night Fights” deal was ever in place. For the first 6 months of 2008, EliteXC posted losses of approximately 24 million dollars. Losses that clearly show the company was hemorrhaging money at a rate that just isn’t sustainable. Losses that were affecting the company on a much broader level than a hyped up fighter who couldn’t cut it.

Gary Shaw is a bigtime **** up, I don't know why any fighter would sign with him.

Shaw doesn't own that company and he wasn't in charge of how the money was spent.

I imagine EliteXC is going to lose more money after the Kimbo fiasco. They are in desperate need of finding a new star now.
