Moving up in weight a few times...

Beating quite a few really good fighters, pretty convincingly in some cases (Camacho).

Even though he fought a lot of bad fighters, getting over 100 wins in the present day business of boxing is pretty damn impressive. Longevity I guess.

-has the most successful title defences in boxing history
-has over 16 wins over future or former champions
-held titles over 3 different weight classes for 11 years

Salvador would have been a better fighter than Chavez(probebly) had he not died, but he just didnt have the longevity that he did, nor did he move up in weight as Chavez did.

            Camacho
            Taylor
            Rosario

            Pretty decent wins:
            Mayweather
            Lockridge
            La Porte
            Ramirez
            Angel Hernandez
            Haugen

There's quite a few good wins that Chavez racked up.

I posted this in another thread about "the greatest mexican fighter of all-time".

Chavez is. Sanchez didn't have the longevity, obviously a tragic situation and through no fault of his own.

This tomato can **** (regarding Chavez) is ****ing tired. The man fought more championship rounds than 99% of these other great fighters. I believe he lost to Whitaker and technically should have lost his first fight with Mel Taylor, but the man was still an incredible fighter.

              Martinez
              Castillo
              Mayweather
              Lockridge
              LaPorte
              Rosario
              Ramirez
              Camacho
              Haugen
              Taylor
              Lopez
              MARTY JAKUBOWSKI!!!

For real though, spaced out over 25 years and three weight classes, that's absurd. Those are all quality wins. He only fought the best win/lose/draw. Dude stepped into the ring with everyone I mentioned plus Oscar, Tszyu and Pea. JC Superstar is a legend...nobody will ever approach a record of 107-6-2 again...not fighting the types of fighter he fought anyway.

As for the topic at hand, I consider these guys the 10 best ever:

              Chavez
              Sanchez
              Lopez
              Saldivar
              Morales
              Olivares
              Zarate
              Gonzalez
              Barrera
              Canto

The first three are in order...after that it gets a little harder.

                What are his real winz?
Mario Martinez, who went to split decision with Azumah Nelson
Rocky Lockridge, who was robbed in his fight with Wilfredo Gomez
Hector Camacho, who had seen better days but still survived in there years later with guys like De La Hoya and Trinidad
Edwin Rosario, a HOFer who went on to win titles in multiple weight classes years later
Roger Mayweather x2, multiple weight class champ who had a great undefeated run at 140lbs and stuck around for years later, going the distance with someone like Kostya Tsyzu many years later
Greg Haugen, Lightweight and Light Welterweight champ who was coming off a win over a very faded Ray Mancini
Jose Luis Ramirez, who had wins over Rosario, and was able to drop and give a very close fight to Alexis Arguello when he was only 21 or so.
Ruben Castillo, who gave Salvador Sanchez a hard time when they fought.
Juan LaPorte, former featherweight champ who was almost impossible to knock out.

he also has other good wins too, like former future champs Giovanni Parisi, Tony Lopez, Joey Gamache, Lonnie Smith and Sammy Fuentes, and just good wins over accomplished fighters like Terrance Ali, John Duplessis, Angel Hernandez and Andy Holligan.

he also went to a draw with a long reigning champ Miguel Angel Gonzalez, which should be a plus because he was pretty shot by then.

                  Longevity and achievements.

People are hesitant to criticize someone like Sanchez who died so young, but you shouldn't give a guy extra credit because he died young. He achieved less than fighters like Chavez and Rock-a-bye Ruben.

It's also not even known if he was in fact, the best featherweight around in the early 80s.

Meldrick Taylor beat him fair and square and was robbed that night.
