The Hopkins win is disregarded for the most part, because Hopkins didn't use his lateral movement and didn't have the great defense that he was known for. In other words, he wasn't using the style that made him great in that fight.Bernard may not have been the best MW when he fought Roy but I still don't think Jones gets anywhere near the credit he deserves for that win. People just disregard it and say Hopkins was "green". Whilst BHop may not have been the 100% finished article when he fought Roy he didn't lose a fight for over a decade after that one and put together a record run of MW title defences. Hardly bum material. To add to that Roy cruised to the win with a badly damaged hand.
I just happened to duck in when I did. That was the first time I even looked in this thread.Comment

Where is Chase "Everyone agrees with me so you're wrong" 8400 these days?
Now that people including a self-professed Roy nut-hugger have agreed with me.Comment

The win is not disregarded at all. In fact, Jones has almost always pointed to Hopkins when asked who was his toughest and BEST opponent. Every time. The Hopkins win is disregarded for the most part, because Hopkins didn't use his lateral movement and didn't have the great defense that he was known for. In other words, he wasn't using the style that made him great in that fight.
And Hopkins' great defense wasn't a great defense until he began his decline. But it was pretty good when he wanted it to be back in 1993 as he made Jones look as inept as he's ever looked. But Hopkins was a MUCH more aggressive fighter than too. So while he may have gained a great defense late, he lost a great offense in the process.
It's all good, brother but then please read all before jumping up and down.I just happened to duck in when I did. That was the first time I even looked in this thread.Comment

Then I'd be a fool who occasionally meets the right answer using horrific means. Like...being unable to see the difference between a middle and a cruiser. Or light heavy. Yikes.
But hey...even a broken clock is right at least two times a day.Comment

I think the prime Hopkins is really the older Hopkins... Trinidad was the start of his greatness. The win is not disregarded at all. In fact, Jones has almost always pointed to Hopkins when asked who was his toughest and BEST opponent. Every time.

Like I said... I was just irritated that you two were going back and forth about what the weight they fought at was called... haha, it just seemed trivial. It wasn't my business anyway though.

I said the fight was at Light Heavy. You said it was at cruiser because Hopkins weighed two pounds over the limit.
Wow. Give yourself a nice big :wank: for that one. You earned it.Comment

That's a great debate. Does 97 Hops beat 2001 Hops? What about 99? Too close.
The Trinidad fight wasn't the start of greatness, it was the start of his fame. Even before he beat Tito he was recognized as far and away the best middle and a top ten pound for pounder. But beating the superstar Tito - and in the manner he did - elevated him on many levels. But those skills didn't just show up at that fight, they were already there. It's NOT a coincidence that the only fighter to beat Hops was Roy.Comment
