Is Europe replacing the US as the leader in pro boxing?

Of the 20 world titles from middleweight to heavyweight, Europeans hold 10, and the US has only 4.

There was a time when 12-18 of those titles were held by Americans, so this is quite a change.

The 2008 Summer Olympics was the first in which the US failed to win a gold or a silver medal.

You can say it's because all the big American athletes are going into football or bastketball, but what about the light heavyweight, middleweight and super middleweight divisions, which have medium-sized men who are too small for pro football and basketball?

Germany is the Boomtown of pro-boxing today. The german promotors have done an outstanding job of recruiting top-talent from eastern europe and turning them into german favorites.

Something that helps the german rise commercially is the low excangerate dollar/euro which makes it easier to lure good americans to fight in Germany.

Neither Dawson nor Taylor have a world title now, although Pavlik has two.

its a matter of perspective i would say U.S. and Mexico are the leaders. U.S. still has top fighters in most divisions. You can make an argument for Cunningham, Taylor, Pavlik, Forrest, Williams, Bradley, Malignaggi, Campbell, and Valero being the best in their divisions.

I love watching big fights on German cards, they always really go to town with orchestras and rock bands before the fight. I don't actually enjoy this part of the show, but it never fails to amuse/ amaze me. A boxing match is really the last place I expect to listen to classical music played by a live orchestra!

Americans are doing ok, its just that boxing is not nearly as popular of a sport that appeals to young kids as so many others do.

I agree. I never did like the antics of Naz either. But I'm an old-school guy.

I can, as you see the spectacle the germans are creating and in a way it gives the sport a show-buzz which is ok by me.
