I think Williams will make a credible MW if he really wants to. Not long ago many observers, myself included, felt that Williams was a boxer of unexceptional skill who couldn't punch to save his life. He proved us wrong on the skill front with a pretty classy and very smart display against Margarito.
OK, he had at least some skill, but he still couldn't punch, and yep, we were proved right when Williams, abandoning his 'boxing' approach tried to walk down Quintana and failed miserably. Then what happens, we got proved wrong again when Williams used the exact same approach in the rematch and stopped Quintana in 1.
Next up his critics claimed that he could only be effective at welter because of his size and would be exposed if he fought at a higher weight. Williams response? A step up to MW and another stoppage, the impressiveness of which, if it suffers for being against a journeyman, must surely benefit from being in round 1. Again.
Now Williams is talking about going back to welter, then back up to MW and even SMW, and once again the doubts are surfacing in my mind. But you know what? Williams has proved me wrong before, and I won't be surprised if he proves me wrong again.Comment
