I personally rate Mayweather as a better fighter than Roy, he had speed and skill like Roy did but knew how to harness it into a schooled boxing game. Mayweather at his best is closer to unbeatable than Roy at his best IMO.

Neither are better than Sugar Ray Leonard, beyond that I couldn't say.
      i agree

i think Mayweather is one of the best allround fighters better than Roy anyway

but as abadger said neither are as good as a prime SRL for one neither of them had the heart of Leonard they would have crumbled in the face of such stustained preassure like Duran's in a 15 round fight

Leonard like Muhammad Ali had balls of steel when push came to shove

Roy was an awesome fighter in his day, the only thing i can fault him on is his resume, but even then it's not too bad.

no.ray was.roy was alot like ali, in the sense that nothing he did was textbook, but he was able to get away with it, because of the extraordinary athlete he was.i think ray was/is the inspiration for what a textbook boxer puncher is and should be, as far as conventionality is concerned.

I don't think Roy was all that sloppy a better description is he was not a text book fighter. I remember Floyd senior saying Roy wasn't all that impressive & he was sloppy, but he if coarse is all about text book fighting.

Mostly I refer to his habit of jumping in behind his punches, pawing and rangefinding with his jab, a defence consisting of jumping backwards and just in general the looseness and unorthodoxy of his style. He used to commit many technical no-nos and it didn't matter because of his awesome reflexes, but it cost him in the end.

                    Agreed on textbook.

                    Unorthodox? Yes.

Sloppy? You kidding? With that style he would've gotten knocked out much earlier than he did.

no, Floyd Mayweather is the closest thing to perfection as it gets in boxing.
