I can't believe someone who say that the ring's fight of the year is nothing special.
I'm not saying the fight was nothing special, or that the past-prime Duran's beating a much bigger fighter like Barkley wasn't an accomplishment.

I'm just saying Barkley wasn't anything special - he beat a fading Hearnes, but otherwise he never accomplished a lot, and lost a lot of fights.

I'm saying Barkley was not a great fighter like Leonard.

Don't forget Ken Buchannan. He was an outstanding lightweight.

Yeah but winning on a low blow kind of takes away some of that don't you think? Why Duran and Buchannan never rematched is beyond me.

          Yeah... low blow FTW.

Duran was one dirty and mean mofo.

He was getting a absolute beatdown... there was no question who was winning the fight. It was more like icing on the cake.

Duran may have won on a low blow but he was mostly dominating the fight at an early age.

Buchanan's best chance to get a rematch was ruined when he lost a close decision to Ishimatsu for the WBC LW title.

Duran's management, mainly Carlos Eleta, avoided the rematch.

Buchanan is quoted in the Duran biography talking about this and how they never gave him a rematch, and he said he felt Duran would fight anyone, but he didn't make the decisions.

Eleta also steered Duran away from potential fights with Ortiz and Cervantes.

Very good. Although Duran wasn't in the best of shape for the rematch (Leonard admitted that he fought Duran again soon because he figured Duran would party too much), he still got in there immediately with the guy who just beat him. It's not like Leonard waited until Duran lost a couple fights and looked lousy, and then rematched him. Leonard mentally owned Duran. Duran disgraced himself.

Benitez looked very good that night. He brought his "A" game, maybe he actually trained very hard for a change. Duran trained hard for this fight, apparently Carlos Eleta sent him to a remote island so Duran would train and not get drunk and screw hookers like he often did.

Those judges were a disgrace. Duran won maybe 2 or 3 rounds in reality.
