It seems that Oscar dela Hoya is having very little problem losing weight for his coming “Dream Match” with Manny Pacquiao.
He may even be having no problem at all.
Internet reports said Dela Hoya, who’s been working out in Puerto Rico the past week or two, is already down to 149 pounds with 12 weeks left before the fight.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told sports analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz that Dela Hoya looked so thin as he watched last Saturday’s boxing card in Houston, Texas.
Arum said someone told him that “Oscar is real thin and he (the informant) hasn’t seen Oscar this thin in years.”
Dela Hoya said a few days back he expects some struggle making the limit of 147 pounds for the Dec. 6 match with Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Arum said Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaeffer even told him that “Oscar is now, now before training, at 149 pounds” or just a meal off the light-welterweight limit.
Pacquiao, for his part, reported from Gen. Santos City that he’s at 154 pounds, and has been eating as much as he wants because he knows he can burn them (calories) all in the gym.
Pacquiao, who last fought at 135 pounds, said he can’t wait to begin training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles where he is scheduled to fly in on Sept. 14.
Dela Hoya has fought his last two fights at 150 pounds, and many believe that he will have difficulty making 147 for the Pacquiao fight.
The Pacquiao camp even insisted, and succeeded, on a clause on the fight contract that Dela Hoya be fined $3 million for every pound in excess of 147 during the weigh-in.
Dela Hoya agreed then laughed it off, saying they can even get the fine to $5 million for every excess pound, and it won’t really matter because he can make 147 pounds.
Dela Hoya will begin his heavy training in October at the high-altitude Big Bear camp northeast of Los Angeles. He will train under the great Floyd Mayweather Sr.
“As a sportsman if Oscar says he’s going to make 147, he’s going to make 147 and he wont struggle. He is 149 right now and all he has to do is dehydrate for a day and he’s 147,” Arum was quoted as saying.
