I dont know why Cotto would underestimate Margarito(a solid professional fighter with a solid reputation), if Cotto does this in fights, hes bound to become a Fernando Vargas whos career never excelled to what it should have, Cotto may actually underestimate opponents, like you said but if he does, A guy like Ricardo Torres will Knock Out Cotto in some rematch, Then Cottos career will be one of a future hall of famer that never got to the hall of fame(like Vargas or Gatti maybe)

If Cotto learned from his mistakes from the first fight and was able to adjust he could win a decision.

If not Margarito stops him again.

I don't know who wins, but for sure Cotto must know that he can't knock him out. It's a completely different equation in terms of maintaining stamina when your mindset is to win on points rather than throwing heavy.

Margarito is one of the best chins in the sport.
He rarely appears to show any signs of fading in fights.
He averages 1200+ punches a fight.

This makes him a handful for ANY opponent from your average B level brawler to even a world class opponent like Floyd Mayweather Jr.

His chin, workrate, and stamina is one tough thing to handle. you cant hurt him to the chin to keep him away...he doesnt get tired and he's going to keep moving forward and swinging until he catches you good.

Miguel Cotto has shaped up to be one of the best body punchers currently fighting. His chin is questionable at times but i felt it held up well against margarito who needed 11 rounds to finally stop him which makes me want to contribute the chin problems with cotto forcing himself to make 140 when he shouldnt have been anymore.

He's also turned into one hell of a boxer as he showed in the mosley fight and margarito fight...

I think cotto will win the rematch as he has one advantage...one BIG advantage that i feel margarito doesnt have; THE ABILITY TO ADAPT.

Margarito only has one true dimenson...one true speed...one true style...thats come forward brawling. He has NEVER been known for his boxing abilty...

Cotto doesnt HAVE TO brawl margarito...nor does he HAVE TO box margarito.

This is what should make the difference.

So long as cotto works the body EARLY and OFTEN he can prevent what happened the first time by not wearing himself out by constantly moving...if he can at least make margarito wince when he goes to the body he can slow him down JUST ENOUGH to last that extra round and a half to get to the scorecards in which he can win a split decision.

If you look at the first fight its apparently clear that cotto got the best of margarito for the first 6-7 rounds. i dont remember MY scorecard but i think i only gave margarito one or two rounds...which means cotto's boxing was working and working very well...

only problem is he didnt go to margarito's body to slow him down and cotto wasted more energy moving away from margarito for the fight than margarito did simply just cutting off the ring and coming forward to cotto.

Thats why the fight ended like it did...cotto got tired and margarito didnt which allowed him to catch cotto and stop him.

If cotto works the body consistantly throughout the fight it WILL take a toll on margarito (to get constantly hit to the body will slow down ANY fighter) thus allowing cotto to catch a break from time to time to conserve ENOUGH energy to get to the scorecards.

My theory is the same as last fight...

if cotto can keep margarito away by attacking the body and boxing him he can win on the scorecards...if margarito can catch cotto he will stop him.

My analysis is Cotto by Split Decision.

If you want to talk about not throwing to the body, then you don't understand boxing.

Cotto can't trade body shots with Marg, it just can't happen. In order for you to throw to the body, you have to be in close with your opponent, do you really think that would be smart for Cotto?

He already was catching upercuts all day, which happens to be Marg's best punch and you want him to stand there even longer taking more punishment?

There's nothing Cotto can do to beat Margarito other than turn into Floyd Mayweather Jr. and that's not happening.

Margarito gets beat by out boxing him for 12 rounds and not getting hit or walked down by him. There are very few if any fighters that can do that. Floyd is the only one that comes to mind. If you stand and trade with him, you will get KO'd.

I think Cotto gets beat even worse in the rematch because Cotto is a prideful dude and he will stand and try and trade more with Marg causing the fight to end even earlier than the first.
Perfectly said my brother! Margarito is a bad matchup for Cotto because Cotto just doesnt have many options on how to try and attack margarito. and we already saw that cotto's best shots margarito didnt even feel them! Cotto would be an idiot to fight Margarito again unless he wants to get TKO'd again!

What Cotto needs to do is give marg. lateral movment instead of backing straight up into the ropes, also he needs to put his ego aside and hold marg when he does get on the inside instead of trying to trade with him, it wont be a pretty win but niether was his face after he lost. Also I think he got so carried away with how easy it was to hit marg. in the face that he completely forgot about the body. There is things he can do to win, marg is one deminsional, but it's easier said then done against marg.
