Lets be honest. The most meaningful fights available to Kelly Pavlik are against Abraham and Kessler since they are the two most credible and accomplished prime fighters at 160 -168, which is Kelly's weight range. If he wants to prove himself he should face and beat them, he's one third of the way there with a victory over Taylor. Now he needs to finish the job.

His other option is a shortcut route. Take on and beat Calzaghe, the current man at 168 and 175 and win instant universal acclaim. This is no-less valid a way to prove himself than the former option. Unfortunately Calzaghe is at the end of his career, going into what may be his last fight, having already beaten in Kessler a guy just as credible as Pavlik is. If the Calzaghe fight happens then great, but if not then Pavlik needs to face the guys who will be his real competition in the future.

What Joe is doing, is deep down he knows he is going to get flack from absolutely everyone, including the English press for not fighting Pavlik. I said earlier that Pavlik is a thorn in his side. He knows what the boxing public wants.

So he is using the press, constantly contradicting himself over and over trying to justify why Pavlik is not in his plans. He is purposely trying to discredit Pavlik publicly now as undeserving and unproven, but always mentioned Pavlik as in his future plans before Pavlik fought his stablemate.

Something about the Lockett fight turned Joe and Enzo away from a possible Pavlik matchup. They saw something in Pavlik that made them think twice about stepping into the ring with him. Using Lockett as a guage to how Pavlik measures up to Joe is silly, but they did it for some reason.

To be fair though, Calzaghe wants to retire, and there is always one more fighter out there. At the moment its Pavlik, had Joe retired a couple of years ago it would have been Lacy and Kessler, if he fights and beats Pavlik, then it will be Chad Dawson, and after that maybe Andre Dirrell!

I want to see him fight Pavlik too, but all these posts saying "ooh Calzaghe is scared of Pavlik" are just motivated by supporting the other guy. Put yourself in Calzaghe's shoes, did he not put the beatdown on the man about whom exactly the same things were said, Jeff Lacy, then follow that up with another big win over another young prime champ in Kessler? Whatever your assessment of Pavlik you have to acknowledge that he is in pretty much exactly the same position as these two guys were. Sure you might rate him higher, he's certainly better than Lacy, but just remember everyone thought Lacy and Kessler were good too, until they faced Joe. The same might easily happen to Pavlik.

Like I say, you have to retire sometime, and if you retire at the top then there always going to be fighters scrambling after you.

joe and kelly are starting to talk about this a bit more, are hyping it up, and maybe they really will fight later this year! i mean they are both talking about each other quite often lately, and maybe a showdown IS coming?

I have thought the same thing, and I really hope so. Of course, it could just be that like Deanrw says, calzaghe is explaining his reasons for not fighting him so he won't get too much flak and that Pavlik is just saying his name to build hype for himself.

Much better if they really are building a fight. You have to admit with Kelly fighting Hopkins it looks like they could be.
