most fights above welterweight dont compete with those below

now i know theres been many, many good fights above welterweight both recently and historically. but in the last 8 or so years, each ring magazine FOTY has been below WW im pretty sure....so its obvious the major talent and the really exciting displays of skill and entertaining boxing are coming from below WW

so my question is, why is this? maybe after years of heavyweights dominating boxing headlines, the tide is turning and the little guys are putting on the great fights? or maybe they always were, but due to the great heavyweight eras we saw, we just didnt notice it...

discuss why the big guys cant really fight anymore

There have been some good fights above welterweight but not nearly as much.

The little men of boxing have usually put on the better fights more consistently, although the spotlight is often on the heavier weight divisions.

The HW's of today do not put on exciting fights, I blame the match-makers as much as the fighters for making fights such as Valuev - Ruiz II.

The CW division has had some good fights but it's mostly a forgotten division.

The LHW division is full of aging boxers who don't have it in them, the fight between Glen Johnson vs Chad Dawson was probably the best the division has seen in a while.

The SMW division has good boxers but they don't fight each other. Kessler - Calzaghe was the last notable fight and it was good.

The MW's have Pavlik and Abraham, I'm quite sure a contest between those two would be a fight worth watching.

I won't even talk about the LMW division.

As TheMachine said, the smaller guys have always given us great fights, it's just the bigger guys got most of the attention, they still get more attention than the little guys.

Here's an example, Klitschko vs Ibragimov didn't have that much hype to it, Klitschko went on a few talk shows etc. I don't even think there was a countdown show for that fight, yet it managed to sell out MSG. Those big guys still get a lot of attention if the situation is right.

Pacquiao would have had to go on multi-city press tours, have countdown shows and make public appearances to try and sell out a venue.

Do American fans tend to have less interest in attending fights?

Over here there are shows that don't sell out, but boxers like Hatton and Calzaghe seem to have a lot more fans attending their shows over here than US boxers do in America. I guess it might be because of the sporting culture over here of going to see a football game every weekend, I'm not sure.

Did Roy Jones sell out venues most of the time?

The economy in the States right now isn't good so some fans can't afford airfare or gas money to get to the events which is part of why a sell out isn't as common in the States now.

Seats are way too expensive nowadays for big fights as well for the big fights.

Sometimes there isn't enough marketing, promotion or exposure.

Jones sold out some venues, I can't remember exactly how many but he had his fair share of empty seats.
