    pacquiao fan!

This writer is a die hard pacquiao fan... The only people who slightly agree with this fight are the big pacman fans, this is why:
If de la hoya wins then so what... "He beat a man so much smaller than him" is what the headlines will read
If de la hoya loses.... "de la hoya embarrassed by a loss to a super featherweight" is what the headlines will read
If pacman loses... "pacman goes out on his shield in heroic fashion against a giant in the ring" is what the headlines will read
If pacman wins... "pacman shocks the world! Undisputed #1 pound 4 pound king" is what the headlines will read

Oscar will get no credit what so ever, but that's his fault, he made his bed and now he has to lay in(even though it will be a bed of money!)

As for pacman, well I can already imagine the type of things that his fans will say.. If he loses they won't except it as a legit loss, and if he wins then they won't stop talking about his greatness.. This is not a fair match up on so many different levels!!!!!!.... For the record, I too happen to be a pacman fan, but I see things for what they are and not what I want them to be...

I really didn't have a "certainty" unless it is that the article was all wrong, and steeply slanted one way, and that Manny is NO Henry Armstrong.

I pointed out that the "fight in the dog" analogy CANNOT be used in the case of this Manny-Oscar fight. I also asserted that Carmen Basilio, already a WORLD MIddleweight and Welterweight Champion, and a battlescarred never-say-die warrior, could not be compared to Manny Pacquiao, jumping about the same NUMBER of lbs, but at a MUCH lighter weight, which skews the ratios.

I pointed out that although Bob Foster had 15+ Title defences, he had no chance against ANY heavyweight, although he was a BIG man, with many physical advantages,
-of which Manny has NONE-who could carry extra weight and was a killer in his own division for years, was not comparable to Manny.

I suggested that Sugar Ray Robinson, over 6' tall and classed as the greatest of all time wasn't taking such a chance in matching against Joey Maxim who was a mediocre Champ, well on the downslide, who, in fact had 16 more fights of which he lost 12, and which fight shouldn't be compared to Manny-Oscar.

So, all in all, my criticism, if you can call it that, was concerning the merits of the article itself, and the facts quoted in the article to support the writer's position.

I found it all to be thoroughly unconvincing, and, becaue of my regard for Mr. Stewart's writing, utterly disappointing.

And, of course, as I said, Manny P is NO HENRY ARMSTRONG....YET.

If everything goes his way for the next, say five or 7 years, and he fights once a month, ranging from the lightweight to the light-middleweight, whilst staying a lightweight, THEN, he might begin to compare.

Of course he has to WIN the majority of his very tough fights, against champions and former champions. His list of opponents needs to be a list of greats and near greats.

Armstrong even gave away weight against a peak Sugar Ray Robinson, to whom he lost a 10 rd decision. Naaah..........Not possible.

What the hell is this ?
The writer saying lamenting of the passing of newspapers.
Newsflash: NEWSPAPERS HAVE BEEN DEAD for years.

We got something called the interweb, and that is staying.

No more overpriced ad space sold by lazy bums to prop up the printed word.

Guy is living in the past.

I agree with your initial assessment that the article is something of a "snow job". It takes a far too favourable angle on the weight difference. It is correct when it says we might as well just accept it though, after all if Pacquiao were to somehow win it would be amazing.

an adden-dum......but nothing "dumb" about it..........

Forgot to mention that in the Robinson Maxim fight, I think that Robinson was so far ahead that he only had to stay on his feet to win, but was actually defeated by the heat, and the heavier weight of Maxim, who d****d himself around Robinson at every opportunity, wearing him out. I think it was around 105-110 degrees at ringside, under those huge lights.

I also believe that Ruby Goldstein. the famous ref, collapsed after the 10th round and had to be replaced.

I don't know if it is just my imagination working overtime about this fight, or an optical illusion, or perhaps actual reality, but it seems to me that in every picture I've seen for the past few weeks, since this fight came on our "screens", I casually noticed that there is certainly NO 4" height difference between Oscar and Manny.

This can only be explained by assuming that Manny has performed a medical miracle by, when long past the age of maturity, suddenly growing 3 inches in a few weeks.........or that he's wearing very high-heeled boots (Heavens forbid)...........

Or that Oscar, in a SUPREME sacrifice to get this fight accepted by the experts, to give his adoring fight fans "what they want" and "help the up coming young fighters".....has had his feet chopped off at the ankles.....................

              Has anybopdy else noticed this???
