personally i felt they should of stopped it sooner, Lyle was hurt and wasn't throwing anything for about half a minute.

Lyle didn't have much left at that point so it was only a matter of time IMO, the stoppage was alright.

I think you need to add an option in the poll for "should have been stopped sooner" Clegg. No way that was a bad stoppage, if anything a little late. He was hurt badly and not returning.

          I can't edit the poll

I should've thought of that option, but as it's a fight that was seen as having been stopped too soon (by some) it didn't occur to me.

On hindsight, knowing how tough Lyle was and his habit of laying on the ropes, he may have been able to continue. He took similar punishment against Foreman and Shavers, from two harder punchers, but then again he was nowhere near as tired.

The stoppage was somewhat controversial for its time because most championship fights went on as long as the fighters were able to stay on their two feet.

Today it would've been fine, very few would've complained. Think of how many boxers have been seriously hurt under circumstances like that (on the ropes, taking punishment in the later rounds of the fight without firing back at all).

You can't stand there and just get hit....Ali could do it by playing rope a dope but he was talking and taunting his opponent while he was standing there letting the reff know he wasn't hurt...If you just stand there with your guard up like that and don't throw a punch back you look unresponsive and the reff has to stop the fight just ask Manfreddo when Calzaghe stopped him early.....Lefty
