Beats me, the entire world is obsessed with the sport even though only a handful of countries actually have a chance of winning the World Cup. However, just one win can inspire a country for decades. I think the second World cup hosted by Mexico in 1986 is what really ended the boxing craze. It's still a popular sport of course but it's nowhere near as popular as soccer.
