    who's left at 147?

    Clottey? he beat him already
Cotto? he probably wont be mentioned with Tony until summer of 09
Mosley? maybe but in all honesty that fight only does well locally in LA

so if he stands by his own mantra of wanting the chance for big names then

PWill is the only name that is there with some meaning

his capitalization of making the most money he can while he has a chance only increases if he rematches and beats PWill (which I think he does as well). Think about it

4 mil for PWill and he wins
    now is the welterweight champ

his status as elite is now soldified meaning he can call the shots. So now instead of taking the short ends of the stick for fights with the elite he can now pull in a better % against guys like Mosley or Cotto. Hell a third fight with PWill could do even better numbers if the rematch is a good one

all because he beats PWill in a rematch

see IMO they are seeing quick buck in fighting a Clottey for say 1 million if that. He fights Clottey and wins who really cares? Especially if its going to be on a TR PPV where me Rogelio Viva and the Tony haters are the only ones watching.

he rematches PWill for 4. His stock rises in victory now he can go to HBO with a flat amount of who he fights and how much he gets. Then mega matchups with Mosley and Cotto give him more potential earning power

    see?

ya i pretty much agree with you now. i keep forgetting the 4 mill offer i guess., but i also wonder if goossen really can come up with that number cause what is paul gonna make? lol there wouldn't be much left. i agree about clottey, nobody wants to see his ass fight and marg beat him already. that's arum's greed cause he has both fighters and will be sole promoter. i don't think arum has the confidence in tony that he will beat williams in a rematch., hell we all know he expected cotto to beat tony, he don't want to lose marg and cotto in back to back fights. **** it then, let them fight in november and let clottey fight berto.

I'd have liked to see the Williams fight as well.

However, there are/were people calling for a Clottey match just the same.

Clottey lost to Margarito, Williams won. That being said I won't be surpised if Clottey wins

But I do see a potential value in rematching Clottey, since Clottey now has the IBF belt which shouldn't be too relevant but it gives him more bargaining power and gets him out of the way. At the same time, the deal that goosen sent to Arum would have set the fight in 2009 anyway while Williams got his mandatory (jennings) out of the way.

The way I see it there are no obstacles to the fight happening in the timeline you propose and goosen had envisioned, I just wish Williams' mandatory was someone a bit tougher so he could use it a a better stake at the crown as the best at 147 and make it so that Arum had no way to defend not fighting him in 09.
but here is the thing that trumps Clottey's belt

Williams has one too and its the one Tony had for the longest time. PLUS he gets about 3 to 4 times more to boot.

and ur right its something I overlook a bit. Dan did say the fight needs to be in early 09 so PWill can make his mando. He is fighting with Arreola on the card Nov 29th.

I think we see PWill and Tony square off Mar 09 when I think about it and the timelines. Both will fight in Nov, both should win, then make this fight for March.

and I have a bet with someone for all my bank though I forget who that Tony wins

Point is, people have been calling for a Clottey rematch loooong before a Williams rematch.

              Thats a fact.

Clottey is good, but he doesn't fight 12 rounds full strength for a guy who says he runs 12 miles a day. Tony will beat him, Williams would beat him, and Cotto would as well. I'd be more interested in seeing him fight Berto, but since he has that belt and a lot of people feel he can beat tony I don't see a problem with that fight in November.

Exactly, it makes more sense than a clottey fight

                      honestly man?

I never thought Bob liked Tony and his team. Why? Because for so long Bob had the joy of getting his Mexican fighters from Beltran and the way it was structured he made a mint off of them. With guys like Tony and Martin Castillo, two Mexicans champs not managed by Beltran, he had to actually share in the wealth. It's no secret he promoted the likes of Morales, Castillo, Arce very well while did little for guys like Gallito and Tony.

so IMO he went on auto pilot with Tony thinking as long as he had a champ at 147 in his pocket he can dangle it at the big name there whether it be Floyd or Zab or Shane or even his own fighter Cotto. Problem is that when Tony lost to PWill (a fight Goossen not Arum promoted and did very well) all of sudden there went his champ in the hole. So now for once he actually had to promote Tony and try to build him back into a champ again. Thats why he got the support slot for Cotto Mosley. Bob figured if Tony looks like a beast in beating Johnson, HBO would say he is back (they did) and Tony would be a factor at 147 immediately after losing.

so Bob is now forced to promote the one fighter he thought he never had to.
