He found a guy that his own team and his fans were only recently calling an "old man" and a guy who should retire. I love how its spun into "he's stepping up to fight a light heavyweight" when Pavlik fights him. Wasnt the case for Calzaghe.

Pavlik was more interested in the likes of Paul Williams than Froch or Abraham.

      pass the torch??lacy?kessler????remember..

''eubank gave a young unbeaten calzaghe a shot at a late stage of his career'',
lacy..unbeaten young, kessler unbeaten young.mr froch your a snake as your name sugests,go after nathan cleverly, anthony mundine, lucian bute, denis inkin, edison miranda etc..you get my point, having a win over a hall of fame fighter like jones cements calzaghe's career, beating froch means nothing eccept that froch can say he fought calzaghe,go and achieve something frochie stake your claim stop trying to lift your profile by calling out the best...adios.

Love him or hate him, he does have a point.

A fight i've never thought about before is Pavlik-Froch. If Froch could get a belt that would be an interesting fight in the future.

I don't think anyone's trying to sell the Pavlik fight as him "stepping up to fight a light heavyweight." Pavlik/Hopkins was a questionable fight to make from the outset, but still the best fight he could land at this time.

Williams expressed interest in Pavlik, and he's a big name in the WW division where he's a huge guy. He and Pav are roughly the same height. It didn't work out, which is probably good as it was questionable to begin with.

After the Miranda fight, Abraham made clear his next fight had to be a mandatory defense against Marquez. Pavlik has said that he will fight him, so don't even act like Pavlik is avoiding AA. This fight will definitely happen next year.

Froch's name doesn't even deserve to be mentioned alongside Hopkins, Williams, or Abraham just yet. Pavlik's not going to go outside of the division to fight a guy who's never held a title and has yet to even make a name for himself.

No he didnt. He called Pavlik's ass out on live tv. Abraham put his trinket IBF belt aside to destroy Miranda. You're telling me he'd turn down the money to fight Pavlik just so he can fight a mandatory? Bollox..........the offer never came from Pavlik's people.

Froch's name isnt big of course. But Gary Lockett's was. Marco Antonio Rubio's was. My apologies.

              The voice of reason

Here's the voice of reason boys.

I'm flying out with two of my mates from Scotland to watch the Jones vs Calzaghe fight at MSG on November 8th.

Now where as I'm a massive boxing fan, my mates are not, but are sports fans and aware of some boxers. However when I mentioned the name Roy Jones Jr they were all up for going to the fight. If I had mentioned Pavlik, they would have said "who"? This is my point at this moment in time. Calzaghe is reaching the end of his career and wants the big pay days, at this moment in time Jones Jnr is a bigger pull than Pavlik. This is why MSG have annouced record ticket sales for the event!

And remember in January after the Tito fight, RJJ said he wanted Calzaghe, long before Hopkins vs Calzaghe and Pavlik vs Taylor 2! Immediately after Calzaghe-Hopkins at the press conference, Jones reiterated his desire to fight calzaghe. A fight between Calzaghe and Jones was in the making before Pavlik-Lockett!

Calzaghe says Jones is his last fight. I am in agreement with the majority of people on this site that he needs to fight Pavlik should he beat Hopkins (don't rule out Hopkins!) and Calzaghe beat Jones, in order to cement his legacy! If Hopkins beats Pavlik, then Joe can retire win or lose after Jones.

Now here is my opinion. Calzaghe vs Jones is bigger than Calzaghe vs Pavlik, at this moment in time. However if Calzaghe and Pavlik both win their 'super fights' in October and November, this would set up a massive fight in 2009, of undefeated champion vs undefeated champion, on a similar scale to Mayweather vs Hatton! Now is this not worth waiting for?

Then again, Hopkins and Jones may prevail, and we've finally got the long awaited rematch!

Good post overall. I wanted to hightlight that bit cos it really is quite sad how many people think that Pavlik beating on Joe's little sparring partner had an effect on Joe's decision to fight Roy Jones.

Joe said he'd fight Jones immediately after he beat Hopkins. Jones had been hanging around Joe during that fight like a lovesick puppy........basically begging Joe for the fight. How times change.

Yes, he called Pavlik out in the ring, and Pavlik has since said he'd like to fight him after Hopkins. But it was also made very clear that Abraham's next fight would be against Marquez. Go back and look at every piece of media that came out right after the fight and you will see that.

Also, Abraham didn't "put aside" his IBF belt, he's still ****ing got it.

As for setting aside the belt to fight Pavlik for money, a Pavlik fight would mean more if it was a unification fight. Not fighting a gimme mandatory in Marquez just so he can step into the ring with Pavlik sooner would have been somewhat short-sighted if it means he would get his title stripped. The fight means more to Pavlik if AA's got the belt.

And as for the offer never coming from Pavlik... the offer never came from Abraham's people either, did it? Or can I not call Bollox too?

                  Re-read what I wrote:

Lockett is a MW and was Pavlik's mandatory. Pavlik never fought Rubio. Froch is a SMW who has never held a belt and doesn't have a name.

                  Apologies accepted.

I know he's still got the belt. But he didnt care about defending it when he stepped up to fight Miranda - a fight he didnt need to take having already beaten the guy with a broken jaw. But he knew fighting Miranda was the bigger fight and more important than his trinket title.

Who gives a toss what belts are up for grabs? Everyone knows that its the two best middleweights in the world going against each other. The fight is beneficial to both guys no matter what ABC trinkets are on the line.

Every piece of media talked about Pavlik's people offering Williams, Rubio and Winky Wright fights but not a mention of Abraham. Abraham didnt "make it clear" that he'd be fighting his mandatory, he has been forced into it due to no offers for big fights.

As for Froch....he's the WBC mandatory at 168. Surely if Jermain Taylor was positioned for a title fight against Froch in his first fight at 168, then it wouldn't have been a problem to give Pavlik the slot now that Taylor has ducked Froch. So again, I dont buy that excuse.

Yeh that would be an interesting one..
Froch would have to generate a few more wins for that though to make sense
or maybe a belt like you said something to bargain with...
