Agreed about the swarming, sometimes he'll throw loads and the opponent can't do anything but guard - the punches aren't hurting but the ref things it's cause the boxers taken too much damage.

Not sure, can be hard to tell in Amateurs sometimes.

No ones doubting he'd make an ok pro, but whether or not he could mirror this success in terms of world titles is another matter. No one will know these things until he steps up.

yep, Mick Hennessey's last big show was on ITV so maybe if DeGale signed with him then they could set something up. Joe Murray will probably join his brother there and im sure if they got DeGale and the TV deal set up then Price and Jeffries would consider joining up.

What gets me is when people degrade amateur records and shrug it off as though amateur boxing is somehow soft. "Oh it's only about scoring points, it's pitter pat punching" etc. Anyone who reaches the olympics has had dozens of fights, made dozens of tournaments, fought in Legion clubs and sports halls and had many many people trying to cave their faces in. It doesn't matter whether you're scoring points or scoring knockouts, you're still hitting your opponent, and you're still hitting them as hard as the situation will allow. Sure a snappy jab scores the same as a big haymaker which is why amateur coaching emphasizes straight fast punching, but if I see an opening to take someone's block off I'm not going to throw out a little love-tap, I'm punching my opponent's chin off his face.

Besides which the more you can hurt your opponent the less punches get thrown back at you and the easier it is to outland them.

I get the impression that the people who degrade amateur boxing are the ones who have never tried it. Boxing is hard and tough whether you're wearing headgear or not.

Are you being serious thinking he would have a shot? Not to take anything away from the guy and I realize there is a alot of sarcasm on this thread but
i've seen top ams fail miserably sparring pros with records like 5-3, there is a huge gap in the talent and experience levels, it wouldn't be close at all.

Do I think that DeGale, fresh from the olympics, would have a chance against a seasoned professional and the undisputed linear champion of the world? Of course not. His career as a boxer is just beginning. He needs to adjust to the pro game. He needs to take a dozen fights against steadily improving opposition including young up and comers like himself as well as season veterans. He needs to get himself a British title. He needs to learn his craft in the professional arena and see if his skills will transfer.

If he has a chin he has a shot. But he might not take to the pro game, we have to see.

I'm just tired of people seeming to take the stance that amateur boxers are wimps. It's pretty ****ing ******. Wearing headgear and scoring jabs doesn't change the fact that someone is trying to knock you out.
