What gets me is when people degrade amateur records and shrug it off as though amateur boxing is somehow soft. "Oh it's only about scoring points, it's pitter pat punching" etc. Anyone who reaches the olympics has had dozens of fights, made dozens of tournaments, fought in Legion clubs and sports halls and had many many people trying to cave their faces in. It doesn't matter whether you're scoring points or scoring knockouts, you're still hitting your opponent, and you're still hitting them as hard as the situation will allow. Sure a snappy jab scores the same as a big haymaker which is why amateur coaching emphasizes straight fast punching, but if I see an opening to take someone's block off I'm not going to throw out a little love-tap, I'm punching my opponent's chin off his face.
Besides which the more you can hurt your opponent the less punches get thrown back at you and the easier it is to outland them.
I get the impression that the people who degrade amateur boxing are the ones who have never tried it. Boxing is hard and tough whether you're wearing headgear or not.Comment

Good post. These guys that win Olympic medals are technically very proficent and the emphasis is on fast straight punching like you say, how can than not be beneficial in the pro game. What gets me is when people degrade amateur records and shrug it off as though amateur boxing is somehow soft. Look at Lomaschenko I'm pretty sure that guy could knock out Alex Arthur on his pro debut.Comment

Yeah, I'm just hating on Khan tbh, we do need an itv propect though now Khans ****ed off.
Agreed, Pavlik's Unorthodox style + Khan's CHin would not stop the main man De Gale.Comment
