Merchant is great. He's not an elitist like Lampley or self serving like Steward and speaks what he believes is the truth. Like everyone else, he doesn't hit on 100%, but I miss him when he's not there.
Merchant's problem is that he speaks the truth, and I'm not sure that goes over well with HBO.

Larry brought character to the whole team. The main reason people get mad at him is because he can be very critical at times but I'd rather have a color commentator who never holds his tongue and speaks his mind than a guy who is just fake and polite.
