Ireland will win three Olympic medals in boxing

Three Irish boxers have advanced to the semi-finals on Friday and are sure to win at least a bronze medal.

    Paddy Barnes: 48 kg
    D J Sutherland: 75 kg
    Kenny Egan: 81 kg

Not bad for such a small country!

Kenny Egan is their best bet for the gold IMO. I'm definitely impressed with the Irish in these Olympics.

Sutherland is gonna get beat by Degale in the next round.

It's 4-1 to Sutherland so far, but Degale is looking brilliant

I have had the privilege of meeting & spending some time with Ken Egan....& also see him fight live.
Almost every year, the gym I am involved with here in Phila., has some Irish ams come over for a night of fights. In June '05, a friend of mine did a documentary on it & I assisted him with it...& Egan as there. He was funny as hell....& a super nice guy. He's also a damn good boxer. He easily defeated a good, solid fighter named Dennis Hasson that night. It was a great, great experience.

I am fully rooting for Ken Egan to take the gold !

DeGale just defeated Arteyev, who had upset Korobov, who was considered by many to be the best boxer in all the weight classes in this year's Olympics and hadn't lost a fight in four years.

No one expected Degale to defeat Arteyev. I agree, Degale now has to be considered the favorite to win gold.

            Here's what happened:

There's been a lot of upsets this year.

Price, the GB Super Heavy also defeated the gold medal favourite for that weightclass. The UKs boxers are doing pretty well this year!

              Overall a great Olympic games!

Sutherland is the older, more experienced fighter though, and has the better head to head record (though they're reasonably well matched). Sutherland should take it.

Egan should beat Jeffries too, age and experience also on the Irishman's side.

Egan and Sutherland are long time amateurs, whereas Jeffries and DeGale are a few years younger and probably better bets to make it as pro boxers.

The Irish lads are impressive amateurs though.

I agree, I saw him yesterday and I though he completely outclassed his opponent.

I guess you never can tell, but I think that he'd make a good professional. He shows good ring generalship and controls the pace of a fight well.
