tarver over jones was obviously his break-out fight. i dont know if id call him a stepping stone since the roy defines his entire career.... the stepping stone was eric harding who he had to finally beat to get there. your definition is flawedComment

Its a shame he didn't have somebody to dance with in his division during his reign. It happens, just like Holmes' reign and maybe even Finito Lopez. The difference was in RJJ's case, Tarver came and proved that he just didn't have competition..and that if he did, he was beatable - Glen Johnson reaffirmed that.
Holmes was also without a dance partner during his reign and that probably is the reason for his seemingly dominant reign...the ALI-period guys were old and he was in his prime. When a worthy dance partner came they didn't even believe it when he was handed his first loss...they had to do it again that is why Spinks repeated over him. Mike Tyson of course put the icing on the cake...he was an ordinary fighter, he just didn't have competition. Finito Lopez same thing...until Rosendo Alvarez came and at least gave him a challenge.
While there are some cases like these, the norm is that an up-and-comer usually wins his breakout fight over a prime and battle tested champ.Comment
