With the amount of people they have in that country combined with their military style methods of nurturing and churning out stud athletes from childhood anyone else think they can become a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world within the next decade or so?? They seem to be hellbent on catching up to world class level competition with already a handful of amateur guys doing well in the olympics

I noticed a lot more chinese fighters at the amateur world championships. They don't have a historical program for boxing but with a billion people they can surely find some great guys and get better coaching. With the amount of people they have in that country combined with their military style methods of nurturing and churning out stud athletes from childhood anyone else think they can become a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world within the next decade or so?? Unlike Cuba, they can probably pay these guys a ton under the table and have really great fighters who are 30-35 winning golds at future Olympics.
Or they get one really good guy, and turn him into the Yao Ming of boxing and burn his ass out before he becomes his best.
It's possible for sure.Comment

Oh I am sure they will if they want to, but it's a power thing. They let you do things but they can call the shots.
If they reward someone well for staying amateur, what benefit is it for them to turn pro?
They can trumpet amateur triumphs and downplay losses, but it's hard to hide a loss on HBO in the main event.
It's really just politics and the money that guides China that makes the government decide who can do what.Comment

no i meant that communist governments generally dont let their citizens become professional athletes in that country, they usually have to defect like lots of cubans do
i mean tthe government might not let them, the rest of the world would of courseComment

personally i would rather be a top class pampered am like the cubans than a pro
you get treated like a king and you dont have to worry about getting screwed over by promoters.. you dont get paid exactly but all your expenses are coveredComment

Very true. But with the amount of people they have in that country it wouldnt exactly be like finding a needle in a haystack to round up a handful of yao ming/nikolai valuev looking dudes that are absolute beasts in a ringOh I am sure they will if they want to, but it's a power thing. They let you do things but they can call the shots.
