Margarito fought Williams because he did not want to be stripped of his belt.I get tired of people distorting that too. Williams was not just some opponent that Margarito chose out of honor. It took a lot of money and the WBO threatning to strip him of the belt if it didn't happen. Those were Margarito's words himself and I can post the quote anytime from what he told HBO. I know he's not a coward. But he seems to get a pass for wanting big money fights. While Mayweather in his 4th and 5th division is a "coward" and a "*****" for wanting big money fights before his retirement. His fans are "nuthuggers" if they point this out, but it's OK for Margarito fans to post daily bull****. There's a double standard there. Same with Pacquiao fighting Delahoya instead of other lightweights. They all want big money but you can't have it both ways.

I have to say I'm surprised given all the bashing the Margarito fans put on Mayweather. Talk about hypocritical.

            THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED.

Like it or not, Margarito is under an exclusive contract with Top Rank Promotions. He is no more free to make his own deal than Peyton Manning or Kobe Bryant is.

Sure he is. The promoter works for the fighter not the other way around.

If Cotto and Margarito chose to say "whoever Bob Arum puts in front of me, I'll fight" that's their own choice. They have the right to speak up and pick their own fights......guaranteed.

No. Margarito fought Williams last year because they threatened to strip him of that ****ty little belt. He had to be dragged kicking and screaming to face P-Dub.

                  True Story.

To stay out of court and make the Williams fight (which he was allegedly "forced" to take), Margarito had to extend his contract with Top Rank for a couple of years. They can't make him fight anybody, but Margarito also can't fight for another promoter without Top Rank having to be satisfied. And now that his name value is at its peak, they won't be easily satisfied. Don't you remember in the past all the fighters who were stuck in contracts with Don King? That led to plenty of fighters being kept on ice and killed a lot of big fights.
