Jermain Taylor has a credible argument for being the best boxer of all time.

Oh **** you're right! They'd have to fight each other for GOAT status but since Crazy Kim will refuse to fight at WW they might have to agree to a catchweight of 158. Just think about it: The Tijuana Tornado vs. Crazy Kim.

Because this topic has been discussed to death, and every answer in this thread so far has been a joke, because everyone who is in their right mind says it is Sugar Ray Robinson, because he holds so many impressive records and has such a stellar resume.

He has the longest undefeated streak ever in the sport (95 fights).
He has fought an astronomical amount of former, current or future champions, which is even more impressive now because there was only one belt in each weight class, and a hell of a lot less weight classes.
He beat a ton of great fighters, including 5 separate wins against Jake Lamotta and 2 wins against both Gene Fullmer and Carmen Basilio.
He started at lightweight and nearly won a light heavyweight title before succumbing to heat exhaustion while ahead on the cards.
He had both longevity at multiple weight classes as well as the impressive feats of moving up to multiple different weight classes.

He really did just do it all.
