Joe Calzaghe's Wrist Injury, or Frank Warren's Lawsuit?

NEWS: It was revealed that Warren, who sued for breach of contract, had also sent threatening legal letters to HBO, Madison Square Garden (the fight venue) and other necessary parties. Hauser notes that HBO then went to Calzaghe and asked him for a promise of indemnification if Warren brought any legal action against the network. Calzaghe refused their request. On July 22 it was announced to the involved parties, by attorney Gareth Williams, that Calzaghe has suffered a wrist injury and was not able to move forward with the September 20th bout with Roy Jones Jr. The fight was later rescheduled to November 8.
NOT NEWS: About two-weeks back, I hinted to the fact that Joe Calzaghe's wrist injury may have been a diversion to give the Welsh champion more time to deal with lawsuit brought forth by his former promoter Frank Warren.
Probably the hand injury is bull****, but there really isn't any basis for saying so, or even really a reason to. Its not so bad having speculative articles on the site, but the subject matter could be a bit more interesting than a fight that was going to happen is now happening later. Its not much of a conspiracy!
What about "How come no-one shows the slightest interest in fighting Mikkel Kessler?", "Why isn't Pavlik talking about Abraham?", "Why has Floyd really retired?"

Perhaps just not cynical and as exaggerating as some journalists and those in the media. I'm surprised more aren't being fooled by it. Perhaps as the same was said with Lacy, where Calzaghe indeed had injuries and was not ducking. He's shown he doesn't do that and has these injuries, so the repeated speculation is just cheap and un necessary.
Prior history in boxing of feigning injury does not justify repeated cynical articles on a guy suggesting he may well be, over and over again.
Both fighters want the fight ASAP, and the small amount of promo time wasn't that bad as they confirmed it. It was the injury, Calzaghe's said he's pissed it happened, and Roy that it's a shame but wants him 100%. There far worse repercussions for both men in their late 30's delaying at this point in their careers so simply no real reason for Joe to make up an injury to delay.
It makes fights after even more past their prime, and possibly takes away from the chances of landing fights after it. Certainly make it more likely there'd be less likely to fit more than 2 fights in next year, so that'd be losing em money. Not to mention the fact their going to have to promote it a whole lot more to get even near the number of British fans over as Hattons already fighting that month. It's also near Christmas where ppl are reigning their spending in. There's big fights already around that time.
A little more time to promote, does not undo all of that and add up to a reason for feigning an injury to delay. It just doesn't make sense. It's a few choice-full loosely true things jumbled together to look like something hugely more. People expressed concern at the article like this last time and this one isn't a whole lot better. The title is yet again just attention grabbing and cheap aswell. Sorry, but true. Also these articles are not appearing to such extents elsewhere.
There's not so many articles speculating on why Mayweather retired. Why ODL won't fight Margarito after originally saying he would. Why Pavlik is fighting an old BHop and not responding to Abraham. Why Dawson is avoiding mandatories. Just this, over and over again which no other site really cares for, not even the public give much credit. It's not balanced journalism. I will note that some other articles from Mark, and I'm afraid to be specific but have to be, have also lacked much serious content with any back bone or serious fact. This guy speculates in his articles far too much, they don't get posted in much so there's not an interest in it, and it's not that valuable on a decent boxing site like this with otherwise great articles on the sport.

Why exactly are the Calzaghe fanboys up in arms about this article?
It's not a slight on Joe, or a criticism, you paranoid ****s....just a possible theory which is becoming more convincing with each passing revelation.

Who said Calzaghe was ducking anyone? He said Calzaghe used the injury story to buy himself time to deal with Warren's lawsuit. Warren must have enough valid points in the suit for HBO to request a promise from Calzaghe to pick up their defense when if it goes to court.
Reasons include Calzaghes age, the fact some will unfortunately speculate and accuse negative things like this again, he's in a weaker position in terms of fighting a couple more times before retiring, weaker position of making a Pavlik fight as the dates might not work out now.
They agreed to the date and the injury stuff came out transparently before the Warren stuff did, which was also quick and transparent. The original issue stood that Calzaghe a boxer renown for suffering with hand injuries, shock horror, has a hand injury. Something else is happening and the analysing for some motive as to another explanation goes into over drive, certainly from Mr Vester.
Less of his fans will attend now in Nov as its close to xmas with 1 fight in Hatton already that month. Calzaghes openly said he wanted to try and make it somewhat easy for his fans as it may be the last one. The suggestions are that he'd intentionally do that to the fans, and take on all those cons just for the one pro that's been come to, of more time for the lawsuit and promoting the fight. It's far fetched. They'll have to do more work to promote it now in Nov around that time, it's not massively easier like is being made out. Even that one motive and supposed reason is feeble and doesn't make sense.
Why not just accept the far more simpler reasonable thing of Calzaghe is merely injured again and Warren is merely suing again rather than constant articles containing mostly misleading headlines and speculation on a matter most don't credit or take interest in.
And Keyser, what's being pointed out is that the amount of speculation, exaggeration, and suggestion of this apparent issue, is to the extent of virtually no other topic certainly that I can remember on this site this year. And a lot more serious stuff deserved of genuine speculation and articles has occurred. That is what's being quite reasonably underlined. It's very unbalanced with even recent events not receiving 1 article, let alone 3, the initial two mostly suggestive speculation not fact, the 3rd trying to feed a separate issue and it's facts into it as some kind of motive. As I say, it's extremely loosely true and un balanced journalism.Last edited by Kris Silver; 08-05-2008, 07:45 PM.
