How Will Calzaghe v Jones Play Out?

How do you think this fight will go down, whoever you think will win?

I've posted before that I thought Calzaghe will jump on Jones like Glen Johnson did, but I've changed my mind. Now I think that Calzaghe will take advantage of Jones' most glaring weakness, a lack of mobility, and box mostly on the outside, using constant movement to both create openings for himself and to stay away from Roy's right hand, something like he did against Mikkel Kessler.

I envisage this being the pattern for all twelve rounds and Calzaghe getting a comfortable UD.

    What do you think?

I posted this several weeks ago.

I think Jones will come out looking to end the fight early, he'll be throwing straights and combos early to get Calzaghe's respect and to not let Calzaghe get into his rhythm, I think Jones can win some of the early rounds because of this.

After about 4 or 5 rounds, Jones' legs will start to show their age and Calzaghe would have adapted by then and he'd start to push Jones back to the ropes to unload punches on him, Jones will be trying to counter Calzaghe off the ropes at this point with moderate success, I think he can catch Calzaghe once or twice on the way in or when Calzaghe gets wild.

But I don't think it'll be enough, Calzaghe's workrate and pressure would get to Jones late because Jones can't fight 3 minutes of every round anymore, Calzaghe can.

Calzaghe should pull away from rounds 10-12 when Jones' age will start to make itself even more apparent.

Calzaghe by decision, something like 116-112 or 115-113. Close but clear.

Calzaghe will come about more wary than he was for the Hopkins fight and show Jones the respect he deserves, I think he will gradually pick up the pace and sweep the middle to late rounds after some close first rounds.

I hope you're right about Jones coming out with bad intentions, because that is something I would very much like to see. For my own part I'm not at all sure that Jones can actually do that. I don't recall him starting fast for quite a few years. How many punches can he still throw consecutively without getting tired? I agree pretty much with the rest of what you say, its the Calzaghe way isn't it? I just suspect that the combination of Calzaghe's workrate, and superior mobility will mean Jones has a tough time staying with him.

It will be interesting to see what changes Calzaghe makes to deal with Jones handspeed, because there is no doubt in my mind that at least early in the fight there will be moments when Jones is able to tag Calzaghe pretty easily.

Something like you sketched out. Only I think that Calzaghe will score a stoppage in the championship rounds when RJJ is tired. RJJ's chin is fragile. Especially at his advanced age.

Hopefully this will be a replay of Tua-Ruiz (Jones replacing Tua and calzaghe replacing Ruiz).

He can still throw combinations but as I said, he can't do it for 3 whole minutes anymore but I think he'll try to fight at a higher pace early to not let Calzaghe get into his rhythm and I think Jones will use his jab more than we are used to seeing to try and keep Calzaghe off balance.

I think Calzaghe will try to smother Jones so that Jones can't use his handspeed too much similar to what Johnson was able to do, it will be interesting to see what he does though.

I reckon Calzaghe would be wrong to give Jones too much respect. No way is Jones a particularly hard LHW puncher and Calzaghe really should be able to cope with his shots. If he gives Jones breathing space then the fight might be competitive, but if he sets out to dominate him then I think Joe won't have too much trouble.
