In two consecutive weekends, we've seen the larger good man defeat the smaller good, maybe better skilled, man. Margarito and Clottey are huge Welterweights. I believe Clottey came into the ring against the late, great, Chico Corrales at 170lbs, 170!!! As good as Cotto and Judah are, they can not compete with the monsters that are beginning to take over the Welterweight division. Andre Berto should be the next victim. What do you all think?
Bigger is Better....

I really don't think Judah is that good to begin with.
He is a fringe world class fighter. Not this uber-talented waster that everyone talks about. That said I think his father is the worst trainer in boxing.Comment

Throw Paul Williams' name into the mix and you have three huge Welters. The new breed of 147 pounders: Margarito, Clottey, Williams. These guys come into the ring between 160 to 170 pounds on fight night. I'm sure the walk around at about 180 pounds, at least. Cotto and Judah need to seriously consider going back down to 140 if the want to continue to succeed in this sport, cuz the new breed of Welters has taken over.Last edited by El 7 Mares; 08-03-2008, 05:38 PM.Comment

No I absolutely agree. I told people that but I get flamed out for making 'excuses' for either Cotto or Judah despite the fact that I'm not even a fan of Cotto and wanted Margarito to win. But the simple fact of the matter was that Margarito looked huge compared to Cotto on fight night and as I understand it they didn't have any unofficial weigh in but I could easily see Cotto at 152 or so and Marg being 160-165 on fight night. The same with last night's fight it just LOOKED like Clottey was huge compared to Judah and his punches were just moving Judah and throwing him around the ring. I mean damn Judah was 143lbs and what maybe 145-147 at fight night and there's a possibility that Clottey was what 160-170 as someone said? I mean that's a ridiculous 3-4 weight division difference. So I agree these big boys are taking over and all the good little guys will fall by the way side because as the OP said a good big guy will always beat a good little guy.Comment

Exactly.
I forgot to mention Kermit Cintron. He's also a very large Welterweight, who deserves more props after what we saw Tony do to Cotto.Last edited by El 7 Mares; 08-03-2008, 05:43 PM.Comment

Leonard was not a small Welter. He was 5'10'' and started his career at Welter. He also fought as high as Light Heavy. He would have stood equal in terms of size with today's Welters.Comment
