I believe JC Chavez may have been the first to do it so maybe that's another reason?

Isnt it supposed to protect against evil spirits and bad luck and all that ****e. I believe Chavez first wore it for good luck because Rosario supposedly practiced vodoo or santaria and put a curse on chavez. That ****er! lol

Julio cesar chavez started the tradition, why? because one of his opponent had done some sorta witchcraft to chavez and they told him the color red would eliminate those curses so he wore a red tape sorta and knoced the guy out. Ever since then chavez kept wearing it.

its because he was paying tribute to his hero JCC and because in mexican culture the red headband protects and wards against the evil spirits.
He even said so in his post fight interview.
