Roy Jones was brutally knocked out. And he came back and won 3 fights in a row. Of course it was against lower level opposition but all of those guys attacked him early to see where he was at. Now he is in an excellent position fighting a p4p opponent in JC. And he did this while in his late 30's.

I agree some guys can't get back but if you want it, you can.

Some boxers who have come back from punishing KO losses that come to mind:

Evander Holyfield (Bowe III, heart problems)
      Nigel Benn (Watson/Eubank defeats)
Glen Johnson (Hopkins, the bunch of other losses that followed)
Archie Moore (Charles and a bunch of other losses)
Floyd Patterson (Johansson, even the Liston and Ali losses)
      Humberto Gonzales (Carbajal, Pascua)
Oleg Maskaev (about 6 of them)...

To be honest I could list names all day, many names came back from brutal defeats.

Of course the majority of fighters who lost were never the same again and slowly drifted into nothingness, but it's certainly not impossible for Cotto to bounce back from this defeat.

He did not seem that affected from it, offered no excuses, looked to have a positive attitude about his future (not crying like Hatton did) but what do I know about him really... We will have to wait and see.

In fact, name a fighter who was regarded as highly as Cotto, yet took such a beating.
        Barrera
        Nigel Benn
        Rafael Marquez
        Israel Vasquez
Toney even though he's never been knocked out

Hell look at Mayorga, Trinidad beat him up worse than he did Vargas. And Mayorga was still able to comeback and knocked out by Oscar.

                  hahaha good call on that.

Dios how much of the loss do you attribute to the broken nose and stamina issues ... or do you think it was just a flat out beating?

I mean the way this fight is being talked about by some you'd think it's Meldrick Taylor-Chavez all over again.

Dios is that ^ the kind of beating your trying to imply? one where a part of Miguel Cotto was "left in the ring"

Mormeck and gatti were never elit fighters. What level were they bouncing back to?

Toney? Against who? When did Toney take a beatdown?

Mormeck was a champ at cruiserweight and as far as Gatti you didn't say in your question that non-elite fighters don't apply. James Toney took a severe beating from Dave Tiberi, but was awarded one of the biggest gifts, a split decision. How about the rest of the fighters I listed?
You just owned yourself with that ****** question.
