Sugar Ray Robinson would have never lost if he fought today.

      Want to talk about excuses?
Robinson has plenty, against LaMotta for the first time (when Sugar Ray was 40-0) he gave up around 16 lbs in weight officially. That would never happen in today's boxing (I said officially, I'm well aware of weight-cutting/re-hydrating after weigh-ins).

Against Randy Turpin (when Robinson's record was 121-1) he took the fight on a week's notice without any preparation, that also would not happen in today's boxing... unless he was a journeyman.

When he fought Joey Maxim, Robinson was again giving up around 16 lbs in weight to the light heavyweight champion. Easily winning the fight on the cards, Robinson had to give up due to the heat (the referee of the bout had to be replaced after passing out). I don't think that could happen in today's boxing either.

Of course I get your point, losses are 'overrated' these days. But as we saw with Paul Williams, a fighter can quickly redeem himself with an impressive win, so did Margarito against Miguel Cotto. Now it's up to Cotto to do the same.

I think Marvin Hagler would be hated on a lot more if he fought today.
Perhaps, but in my opinion most of the hate towards Hopkins for fighting 'smaller' men comes from the fact that most of his RECENT fights have been rather boring, not really because of his resume.
Everyone would love to watch a destroyer like Hagler in action, whether he fought great opposition or not.

Knocked out once in 1403 rounds of boxing AND almost 200 fights . Jesus Christ. His record was ridiculous.
Amazing he once said he's didn't enjoy fighting that much. Imagine if he did.
        Good god.
        LOL

Robinson only lost once at welterweight to Jake Lamotta who was an all time great at middle weight at that point already(Robinson 144.5, Lamotta 160.5). A 16 pound difference and he beat him 2 fights later.

There is a reason he is called one of if not the pound for pound greatest fighter of all time. He had his second lost after 128 fights which he immediately avenged.

If he fought in this era nothing would change. He hit hard, was in amazing shape, had an amazing chin, coordination, speed, reflexes, and great boxing skills.

I remember reading that Sugar as a little boy would run away from bullies. As did Jack Johnson. Pretty interesting that those two men at a young age were not built to destroy right away.

I'm not a Cotto fan, let alone a nuthugger.

1403 rounds boxed is an impressive number, but becomes much less impressive when you deduct the rounds boxed against bums. Does Floyd Mayweather get credit for all those rounds he boxed vs. the likes of Cooper and Giepert, let alone credit for not getting knocked out in those rounds? Of course not, and he shouldn't, but Robinson obviously does. Why? Because 95% of the posters on this board have never even seen him fight.

My cousin's cousins use to pick on DLH when they were kids in elementary. Usually you have to know what it's like to be the victim if you want to learn to be the bully. Then you know how to be the bully, and not be beat.
