Rematch Analysis: Miguel Cotto Should Beat Margarito

Keith i do disagree about clinching.

maybe now after the lost, if there is a rematch, he might clinch when on the inside.

but its just not in cotto's nature to hold, is to punch back. its easy for us on the outside to scream hold him. its not cotto. he punches back. margo does the same way, boom boom did it. pryor etc. their mentality is punch back.

Major problems with your analyses,

#1 - About the body punching, in order to attack the body convincingly you need to be in front of your opponent to land to the body effectively. You could jab to the body and move but to land hard effective punches, you will need to stand with your opponent, something I highly don't recommend to Cotto unless he wants a repeat performance.

Also, Cotto tends to dip his head forward when throwing to the body, as most do and Margs best punch is the left uppercut. Not a good combination if you ask me.

#2 - Standing his ground and sitting on his punches more. Wow, where do I start, I think Cotto did try and do this to some extent if you watch the fight very closely but it's easier said than done when you are getting hit with hard left hooks down low and then are being pushed backwards by a bigger stronger man.

If Cotto stands in the middle of the ring and holds his ground more, he will have success and maybe land better punches but so will Marg. It will end quicker than what it did in the first fight if he decides to stand and trade with Marg and his corner knows this.

If you hear the corner of Cotto (in spanish) they were telling him to get off the ropes and don't stand in front of him...move, move move!!

The rematch would be much of the same......

We'll see what happens in the rematch. You apparently think Cotto's best shot is to run even faster from Margarito and try to pull a Corey Spinks job or something. I've already stated what I feel Cotto's best strategy would be, and it doesn't involve running. I think Miguel gave Margarito some added steam by leading him straight to the ropes all night. He allowed Margarito to fight just as he prefers to; coming forward. Cotto may not take it as well on the chin as Margarito, but he does punch harder than him. He needs to get Margarito's respect early on in the rematch, and going hard downstairs gives him his best chance to do that. I have little doubt that Cotto can hurt and certainly slow down Margarito by going to the body. He won't be able to do that if he's backpedaling all night. Cotto might expose himself to more counters by standing his ground more, but his superior hand speed and timing should allow him to get the better of Margarito for the majority of the exchanges. Margarito is used to coming straight forward and walking his opponent down. He obviously trusts his chin, but even he (yes, folks) can get dropped if he eats enough shots.

Its amazing how dedicated you all are to Cotto.

But at least pick some other fight for the man damn!!

I can see if the fight was close....but he got punished.

He was in survival mode 90% of the fight.

What has changed or could change that drastically within a year?

There is nothing he could do anytime soon.
